FREEDIVING IN STOCKHOLM?! Exploring Stora Vika Quarry

Last Sunday we went out with some freedivers from Stockholm Apea to dive and explore the quarry of Stora Vika. It was truly amazing. Stockholm don't offer a lot of places with a clear visibility, but Stora Vika kalkbrott was clear. We saw plenty of perch as well, and they weren't afraid of us, so we could swim close and even take selfies with them.
Another thing was the seaweed or algae that was growing everywhere. It covered the bottoms, rocks, branches in a way that it almost looked like corals!
This is the first collaboration video with Marco Strong, and more will surely come in the future.

Great footage, thanks for sharing! We're considering going to Sweden for our next summer holiday. Initially I was a bit disappointed that there will be no freediving (vs typical destinations like Mediterranean islands), but I quickly found your video(s) and it is awesome to find out there is a nice freedive scene. What kind of wetsuit (mm) do you wear for 20° water temp? And at what time of the year did you measure the 20°?

This quarry is quite clear, but most dive spots on the east coast of Sweden are not... In this video I used an 5 mm wet suit, which is perfect for 20°C in my opinion. This was during the summer. In winter, there's ice on this spot. I have a video about it you should check out :)

For those wondering. Today there are active industrial business going on in the quarry (bio fuel from wood chipping) and there are active machines in the quarry. The roads are blocked with barbed wire and shipping containers. So it is not possible to dive there any more.

Whats the max depth there?

Only 20 meters. Not so deep, but deeper than Ingbo Källor ;) (2-3m)

@@TravelOns did you find a spot 20 m deep ? Where in the quarry was that ? Been there a lot, but just got 16 m at the most .

@@Fenderbender1046 20 meter is what I heard from other freedivers from Stockholm Apnea. Let me do some research and I can find an answer. Regarding visibility, would you say that it was clearer this day, normal or bad, compared to the times you've been there? I guess it's clearer during the spring and/or winter?

@@Fenderbender1046 Update! I talked to a freediver from Stockholm Apnea who said that it's 23 meters deep according to Nynäshamns komun. The quarry is quite big, so there might be a spot that is a bit deeper.

@@TravelOns visibility was normal for this time of year. (10-12 m) . I never dived there in the winter. It's iced then. But in early spring just when the ice has melted, the visibility is quite poor. With diffrent layers of algue (or something like that) The summertime is best.

Yes, good point! There's soo much trash laying around the quarry, I get sad :( Perhaps we could arrange a clean up of the place some day
