Zanskar is an ancient realm in the heart of the Himalayas. In this isolated enclave, the highest populated valley in the world, 12 000 Zanskaris live in total autarky. To put an end to this isolation, the Indian government has launched one of its most spectacular construction sites. Hanging on the cliff face, following the meanders of the Zanskar River, the road is progressing very slowly. For the inhabitants of Zanskar, the wait is endless and many despair of seeing the road reach them one day. One man is taking things into his own hands. PS: This is the same village as in the Ice Walkers documentary.

The couple that were hiking the trail, were distraught by the thought of a road coming in, and destroying, what they feel, should remain untouched by modern technology. But, the people who actually live in these villages, want more access to goods, and doctors. Which would you choose? I for one, think that if the people wish for better access to the things they need, that takes a higher priority than destroying some flowers. lol
@hitmanvr6Ай бұрын
100% this is THEIR land. You could see it in their faces when they spoke about how they cannot leave without a road even when sick. You can see the family and friends that have been lost because of how hard it is to get food, supplies, medicine and so on.

There's plenty of wilderness everywhere in the world. If you love nature that much, just go anywhere that hasn't been developed by humans. In the USA, go out of town & you're instantly hit with nature. So at most maybe 50-100 mile drive until you could become one with nature.

I find it upsetting that some Westerners prefer to see some countries underdeveloped because it will ruin their preferred lifestyle of loving nature because their countries have developed way more to the extent they no longer wish to live there.Why would that woman say she hopes that the development of a road would not be a negative thing for the people when clearly it’s to allow them to travel safely as cut the long journeys…because she wants to escape from the life in her country?

It’s really mind boggling, that in a vast country with plenty of resources, a private citizen is responsible for providing infrastructure. Then it’s no wonder that India’s neighbors have easily annexed its territory by simply providing a better livelihood. Shame on the government of India!

This man is undoubtedly heroic, but today there is a road from Zanskar to Phuktal Gompa. Most of it has been built by the Border Roads Organization, and they also maintain it, clear boulders, snow and landslides. I don't see why the documentary makers felt they had to trash the efforts of this organization and the Indian taxpayer.
@staywokecuhhАй бұрын
I do not know 100%, but i did look it up. And it seems that the border org took over construction AFTER the documentary would have been there, and filming. The source i found for this, was the fact that Jigme Pema Wangchen went cycling with those nuns back in 2016. So it doesnt seem like an active attempt at undermining their efforts. But rather, a simple case of unfortunate timing.
@whaddoiknow6519Ай бұрын
@@staywokecuhh Thank you for the info. I agree with you for the most part, and I wish the documentary would have said something about the date of filming. Still, I found the general lack of acknowledgement of the BRO a little unfair. They have been doing some pretty difficult work for several decades, well before 2016. A poor country like India needs to prioritize very carefully.
