You missed the islands of Saba and Sint Eustatius as part of the Dutch Antilles. Also maybe worth mentioning is that Jan Schenkman (who wrote the 1850 kids book 'Sinterklaas en zijn Knecht') was also a prominent member of 'Maatschappij tot Nut van 't Algemeen'. An association which, among other things, fought for the abolition of slavery. Schenkman's inspiration for his book came from a German book published a couple years earlier in which Saint Nicholas punishes 3 white kids who were bullying a black kid by putting them in a pot of black ink. His aim was to introduce black people to children in a fun way and show that these are not people to be afraid of. Black population in the Netherlands at the time was still well below 1% so most people had never seen a black person, but Schenkman knew this was eventually going to change. I didn't know about Ashanti and Akan soldiers being inlisted in the army. Quite interesting. Thanks for giving me a new piece of our history to study. Great video overal.

This is crazyyyy!! As a dutch black man, our school history classes never told us this side about the VOC or the Golden Age. They were all positive and proud facts of the history which brought this country its wealth. But the true workforce behind it was never really mentioned. Even the colonialism that was mentioned was only the information about the East Indies. I was always a little upset how fast they skimmed through slavery as if it didnt happen primarily due to this country

Wow, I never knew anything about blacks in the Netherlands until now. We are spread across the 4 corners of the earth. My take about the black face is not only is the face black, but their hair is wooly. How do the explain that?

I like your channel, just a point of correction. Kwasi is pronounced Kwa-esi and not Kwazi. The A and the E are expressed separately but because of the dominant E sound the A is almost silent. A native speaker of Twi can however pick up the difference between Kwasi (how most Akans spell the name) and Kwesi (how the Fante spell the name) .

Could you please make also vids of black history in Guyana, Paraguay, Uruguay, French Guiana and Chile? Also ABC island and 3 S islands have much information. Such as Tula who was a great leader!

That will be Kwaku Summerfestival. The why is simple, black people like to party.

What's left out is that the Dutch Colonized Guiana before the British defeated the Dutch and renaned Dutch Guiana as British Guiana. The well k-nown (the letter k is not silent, why should it be and by whom?) AhFreeKan Emperor Kofi (Cuffy) of Dutch Guiana (Guyana) was the twin Brother of a Ghanaian Warrior. It was Emperor Kofi of Dutch Guiana who started the first Slave rebellion and revolt in the Americas before Hai-Ti not Hate-he as Americans and British English talkers 🦜🦜 do often say.

Do you want to make black history content or black fiction? You got almost every fact wrong. Let me guess, your British and with that typical British colonial sense of entitlement you believe the British version of history and the British perspective on foreign cultures is the right one, because you can't read any other langue or understand any foreign culture. Sorry, the Dutch got rich, filthy rich, from fair trade with other Europeans. Well before they gave up on their objections to slavery in 1638, till then slaves were freed. They were actually one of the earlier countries to end the slave trade, that didn't bring them much financially. The Dutch overestimate the Dutch part in the slavetrade hugely, which was very small, just like they overestimate the wealth colonialism brought. Schenkman was an abolitionist, minstrel shows and blackface are Anglo traditions unknown by the Dutch. Zwarte Piet is a young black man, the soot story is for the benefit of children not mixing him up with black Dutch. The golden carriage is obviously post slavery to anyone who actually takes a look. I guess if people have to make this much stuff up to make the Dutch look racist, they aren't racist at all. Which is of course what the Dutch have known all along by simply watching how terribly backward the Americans and the British are.

Afro Netherlands that's a stupid label, because there's no such nation on the map....You are either Dutch or Surinamese you can't label some one because of their ethnicity. It's the same thing with African American or anyone other ethnic classification.....
@FreedomIsMineOfficial3 жыл бұрын
Hi Marlon, thanks for watching and sharing your perspective. That's just the way I chose to title the series, I put 'Afro' and then the name of the country, so it's obvious what the video is about. You will see all other videos in the series are titled the same way. I don't ever refer to the country or the people by that title, or encourage anyone else to. Thank you for watching.
