I know what you mean. When I was first got into metal, I was listening to the classic bands like Metallica, but as a kid coming from enjoying 90s pop, and a love of movie scores by the likes of John Williams, I knew there had to be more. One day, I was reading a local music stores product catalogue and saw a Tama drumkit. In the description it said something like "played by drummers like Lars Ulrich of Metallica and Mike Portnoy of Dream Theater...", and I was like wait...Dream Theater...who are they?! Something about that name had a whole vibe behind it, and I was not disappointed.

Also shoutout to Derek Sherinian. You may not think he was the best fit with the band (the band certainly didn't), but if anyone who's ever played with Dream Theater can be called underrated it's him. At the very least I loved that Derek brought his personality and style to the band, and I appreciate the "old school" tones that he preferred. @@Loctorak Myung is one of the greatest bassists ever. Maybe it is because he doesn't have a 'signature sound' that makes him instantly recognisable, perhaps? Like I could tell you if Geddy Lee was playing, or Flea, or Victor Wootten or Les Claypoole, etc. However John is an absolute anchor in a musical whirlwind and a technical beast. To play what he played for three-hour long shows on tours is not even something I want to comprehend. I wouldn't have a right hand left as my tendons would be so sore that I'd want to cut it off.

@@AllThisOverASliceOfGabagool Even if Myung would have a signature sound... doubt he would get more credit. He looks to me like somone who is closer to the extremes of introvertness. He is not the type that likes to be under the spotlight. If musicians don't do clinics, lots of interviews, drumeo videos, appears in front page of magasine, promote themselves on every social media, etc... hard to get your name kind of become a brand and be recognize almost everywhere. I see a lot of incredible drummer/bassists as good as Portnoy/Myung and well would I give you their names that probably you would have never heard of them. It is just that they have decide to stay low profile like Myung.

Back then when drummers where musicians and not just racers for the fastest blast beat at 400 bpm..

Fast blastbeats are interesting for the Tech-Death bubble, which of course is something totally different to the Prog Metal of Dream Theater. Comparing both is simply wrong. Also you can be creative at fast tempos and with blastbeats.

Ahhh the inexplicable belief that someone is no longer capable of musicality because they are playing "too fast" Lars Ulrich proves to us that speed has nothing to do with being un-musical and sounding like trash

Laughing at my self. I had KZbin on 1.25 speed and I was like there's no way Mike Portnoy played this.... I was right. Honestly, I think it's better at 1.25 speed.

I'm on the fence. Truly, James brought something unique and recognisable to DT. I respect his ability as a singer greatly, but damn id be lying if I said I didn't sometimes wonder what they might sound like with a vocalist more in the realm of, say, Mikhail from Opeth or Howard Jones of old school KSE... Imagine something like the breakdown in Glass Prison, or the intro to Home but with some harsh vocals around it to build it further and/or drive it home.
