I started watching this video with no expectations.The 'Plaster Carving ' in the title was what caught my attention. As a fellow artist I'm not even particularly fond of freeform sculptures,yet I found your video very informative, enjoyable to watch and I do actually like your finished piece.Thank you!

Thanks! I gravitate towards realism but I do find freeform very soothing at times.

Beautiful - informative. I hope to create a sculptural piece to place in our garden wonder about water proofing (PNW location) and weather something can be added in the plaster mixing stage to provide a material that can withstand the weather...and tips most welcome!

Hello. Thanks for the watching. I am mostly used to doing interior works but I have done the same process with a sand/ silt based cement and then painted white with an exterior paint. You just need to keep it wet while carving, and then let dry before painting. I imagine even with sealing plaster it wouldn’t be lasting outdoors. You inspired me to create a new work this way and make a video. Thank you!

Great video. Hepworth and Moore were 20th-century artists.

Ty for the awesome video! Any tips on mounting or displaing a finished sculpture?
@artwithandrews72672 ай бұрын
Your welcome. Thanks for watching! Here is a link to a video I made about mounting and balancing some sculpture. I used a dowel for this one. m.kzbin.info/www/bejne/qInFnpWkm559fZI

❤ Beautiful. Such a lovely piece. Would love to know from start to finish how long this took to complete, and what tool were you using to carve.
@artwithandrews72673 ай бұрын
Thank you! I used a variety of tools but mostly a large ribbon tool for wheel throwing. I finished with a layer of joint compound and sanded with fine grit sandpaper. It took about 5 hours total.

Really nice! I'm a big fan of Barbara Hepworth and Henry Moore. I've done some sculpture work with flat wire, polymer clay, and marble, but never plaster. (I'm pretty new to sculpture and still finding my medium.) Can you get a smoother or semi-polished final texture with plaster, or is it always going to be somewhat rough at the end? I've seen smooth, white, open freeform or ribbon-like sculptures and never know what the material is.
@artwithandrews72676 ай бұрын
Yes! You can get a smooth matte or gloss finish with different clear acrylic spray paints. I am inspired by both those artists and love their work. Happy sculpting and thanks for tuning in!

the Italian masters way of mixing plaster . dry lake bed

Yes! I never fully understood dry lake bed so I always used the term The island method.

Good Video.. Do you coat the finished sculpture with anything or just leave it as is ?
@artwithandrews72675 ай бұрын
I actually didn’t since I liked the matte surface texture and didnt want to take away from that. There are several finishes one can apply but most all of them affect the sheen. Thanks for watching!
@Walua2 ай бұрын
Thank you for the excellent video. Did you seal it with anything to protect it from absorbing moisture overtime?
@artwithandrews72672 ай бұрын
@@Walua thank you. I don’t apply any sealant as I don’t want a shiny surface. I like the way the original mat finish lets light move around the form. Thanks for watching!
@artwithandrews7267Ай бұрын
@Walua I didn’t seal this one as I didn’t want to compromise the luster. Thanks for watching!

How do you repurpose the plaster chippings?
@artwithandrews72676 ай бұрын
Basically by smashing them into powder, screening the powder and then cooking the plaster to get all the water out at 250 degrees. It’s a lot of work but saves the plaster from the landfill.

How do you repurpose the extra plaster?
@artwithandrews72672 ай бұрын
I break it up, screen it, heat it at about 250 for 3 hours to remove all water and it reactivates the cementation. Sometimes I add a little new plaster to the old just to be sure.
