Troy, I would like to suggest " Free Range Farmers" as your new moniker. " Living " is definitely too vague for your garden and livestock operation. Farming is a proud tradition you should embrace !!! Ps, I recently, last night, doubled my Patreon donation amount for you two special people !!! Best wishes always .......

Now that we have a little more experience on the land, we have a lot more admiration for farmers who manage a yield, on time and in quantity every year. Amazing management! Also, thank you for the support and I hope each of our episodes brings some happiness to your home. Best wishes to your family, T&P

While you were busy bashing posts in the ground and making the fence bigger I was thinking what about the electric fence that you have? Run that around the outside of the veggie patch (maybe double strand height or triple strand height) and see if that keeps the little buggers at bay.

They have less respect now while it's dry. 8000V is now 4000 which is still plenty for pigs and even chooks occasionally but those goats will tolerate it to get through. Tough hombres.

Great Video Pascale and Troy ! ... that sort of 'corporate sponsorship' I think should be encouraged, great to see that an aussie lawyer and engineer/diver/jack-of-all-trades can help inspire kids from the other side of the world into growing food and perhaps learning a bit of business skills while they're at it. Will be sure to seek out Manini Farmstead next time I am in Hawaii ... excellent artwork Max !! On this side of the country (Sydney), every thing is green and lush at the moment, easy to forget that it is the dry in other parts. Thanks once again for your videos, love the down-to-earth nature of you guys. ..and yeah, I knew that Cooma could bop Jet at any time he wished, but he seems to put up with a lot :) cheers. Pots.

If you stake posts on the vertical, then place posts on the opposite to make a V, your cucumber will hang inside, rather than out, umm 🤔 I think you’ll also need, some horizontal posts as well!🤷‍♀️

Acquire some bentonite clay for your critters stomach upsets...it is also super awsome to clarify your cider or other alcohol brews. It's negatively charged and will attrach most things that will upset your critters stomachs and the floaty bits in your brews as they are positively charged. Cation exchange of you want to get sciency.
@FreeRangeLiving

Great info thanks. Do you think charcoal plays a similar role? I would imagine the fine nature of clay has an even bigger surface area.
@ryan-w
@ryan-w Жыл бұрын
@@FreeRangeLiving it might be a good side by side comparison to try with one of your cider brews, because you are correct activated charcoal is also negatively charged. My money is in the bentonite. With the animal remedy, bentonite is used in some scour treatments avalible from vets at least here in NZ. I've not seen any charcoal based products. I also left the farming industry 7 years ago so there is likely developments.

Hey guys, just wondering why you haven't put an electric fence around the veg patch? I would stand it about 2 feet away from the veg fence and that should stop them from getting to the veg. Also, put both wires a little higher. All the best.
@FreeRangeLiving
@FreeRangeLiving Жыл бұрын
At the moment, the ground is so dry that the electric fence only packs half its punch and the goats tolerate it to get to their target. Once it rains, the full 8000V gets transmitted and the goats respect it once more. Pigs- they hate it no matter if it drops all the way to 2000V and never cause a fuss.

a reuse resource for fencing is the wire springs from mattereses from tips. Because they are thick they keep distance between animals and food or foxes and curious hen heads. my chicken coop is made out of them. 10 years so far though rust will claim the fence in another 5 years. They also make reasonable gates if boxed in a timber frame. might be a helpful tip. cheers

Hey guys , If the fodder is drying up they may start ringbarking the trees.Another tip ...you have ringlock around your garden...Be wary where a post has devided a square in half...Goats have been known to choke themselves to death in the part squares while reaching for that extra blade of grass etc
@FreeRangeLiving
@FreeRangeLiving Жыл бұрын
So far, no ringbarking but that's a good point about the ringlock. They are accustomed now to the tether, but we are giving them their own yard for the wet season as they hate the rain and it would be quite mean to leave them out in it.

Sorry to hear that you were sick Pascale. Hope you are thoroughly over it. You don't look any the worse for wear but knowing what a trooper you are I don't think you would show it anyway. Also sorry that you had to discover how incredibly determined goats can be to get at a food source that they have their heart set on. Especially when it's produce that you were planning to use yourself. They are really enjoyable to watch but as with most animals raising them comes with drawbacks. Hopefully the raised fence will do the trick and if not,.........the dog run wire system should do the trick. Good luck.

I asked my cousin how she keeps the goats out of her garden. What she told me is that she grows lavender in pots. She uses the lavender when making candles etc. But she puts several pots around her garden. It's very effective she says at keeping the goat gang at bay because they absolutely hate the smell. Might be worth a try.
@FreeRangeLiving
@FreeRangeLiving Жыл бұрын
I think growing lavender is a great idea- hope it is effective for us too! We will give the goats their dedicated yard, with supervised outings. They are so much fun to walk with anyway and we can keep the tether system for putting extra pressure on weed outbreaks.

Especially when it's someone else's automobile they're walking on. I think that if I had goats it wouldn't be long before they started looking rather tasty.

Barb Wire is NOT the answer: 2 simple strands of Hot Wire works wonderfully; one half way up where they'll brush up against it, and while they're trying to stick their noses though the Turkey Wire Squares to grab grub, and one at the top-pushed out about 4"-6" when they try to go over. Using Barb Wire as you are, you're going to end up with goats hung in the wire, either with broken legs (needing you to put them down) or with broken necks. The 'cheap' and 'easy' way is almost never a good answer. Cheers from the Oil Patch in Central WY, USA
