Hi, I was just wondering in the exam if we get a question based on this required practical would we be expected to remember the name 'sodium thiosulfate', or would that be given to us so we only had to recognise the term? Also, I wanted to say, your videos are SO helpful! Every GCSE student I've ever met would agree that you are an absolute legend - the number of students you have been able to help is astonishing. Thank you!! :)

Hi sir, for the second practical, u know when u change the concentration of the acid. Would you keep the volume the same, or actually change the volume itself, eg by diluting it, so that the amount of acid stays the same, because increasing concentration whilst keeping the volume constant, must mean increasing the amount of acid, however wouldn't you want to keep the amount the same? Thus the only logical thing to me is to dilute it, right?
@Freesciencelessons Жыл бұрын
You only change the concentration of the hydrochloric acid, not the volume. So that means adjusting the volume of water so that the total overall volume remains constant. You are right, by changing the concentration of acid, we are changing to amount of acid particles in the given volume but that's fine since that's what concentration means.
@mintjoe86 жыл бұрын
for the reaction in which a gas is given off do you need to know how it would be done using a gas syring and a mass balance?
@PyrexAgar6 жыл бұрын

Question: in the first experiment, you would change the concentration of the thiosulfate solution while in the second you would change the concentration of the hydrochloric acid. Why wouldn't you, for example, change the concentration of hydrochloric acid in both experiments or change the mass of magnesium in the second experiment?

wouldn't doing the experiment again with a different concentration of sodium thiosulfate count as repeating the experiment again? And also, can you do the experiment with a higher concentration of sodium thiosulfate solution and not just a lower one?
@heathwellback51106 жыл бұрын
If you're talkin about reproducibility, then no cos he said you need different methods too. But for your second question, yes you can use higher concentrations, the conclusion that more hydrogen is given off in a fixed time would stay the same. You're only seeing the difference between a greater concentration and a smaller one.
