This is a 2 year review. We have a 750sf cabin that is primarily used on weekends and for a full week now and then. There have been long stretches of time when we do not go. Most of the time there are 3-4 people at the cabin and a few times we had 10 people. We had a composting toilet at our cabin for 14 years. The name of that toilet rhymes with Wy-wo-let. That toilet occupied constant space in my brain due to the problems. It had a heater, an electric churn, and you had to add compost medium after every deposit. We I had to constantly monitor it when using. A few times we let our friends use our cabin and they did not fully understand how it worked and they broke it. I will not go into details but, repairing it was nasty. I got tired of repairing it and threw it away. My neighbor has a Natures Head. He liked my toilet do much he is trying to convert his toilet to perform like a Seperatt. Another neighbor has a Sunmar. The Sunmar is like our old toilet. • Price of the 9215 is competitive. • No need for compost medium. • We can use it shortly after arriving at the cabin during freezing temperatures. No compost to thaw before using. • When we or guest leave the Separett gets emptied. No compost is left in the toilet when the cabin is vacant. Huge Plus! • Easy to use. Minimal user instructions. First time users can understand. • Few moving parts. If something breaks, I can easily remove the compost bucket and repair the toilet. All the parts can be accessed by opening the toilet. To this day I have not seen any wear on the parts. • Emptying the Separett is fast and easy. It is stinky. If you make a plan emptying it, you can mitigate the smell. • Low power draw. • Quiet • Vent fan works well. Our log cabin has about a 1" gap above the bathroom wall for log shrink. I installed 30” of pipe with one sweep 90 for venting. We have a wood stove and a range hood fan that compete for makeup air. There are no odors even if our guest went to the greasy spoon down the road. • The Separett takes up less room than previous toilet, looks good, and feels good to sit on.

Separett Villa 9215 The "Parts Included" page says 10 bio bags. It had 2 in the flat envelope in the bottom of the box. When you raise the lid it has to go over the vent lip to lock in place. Have to grind away a bit of the lid to keep it working as needed. All support said "Never saw that before" and that's it. Thanks

Hello Bob - there certainly should have been 10 bags in the box. Not understanding what you're meaning by 'go over the vent lip" . Something you could send a photo for? can anyone explain how this would be better than installing a septic tank? as I understand you would still need some piping for the liquids but not as big a tank. is it just a different option? I'm in the middle of a project and I can't make my mind. any suggestions ?

The fan cord connects on the left side of the blue fan housing, inside the toilet as you face the unit. The input looks like the head of a nut - but is the receptacle for the din plug connector. You bring the cable into the toilet through a hole in the middle of the back of the toilet. Excellent video. But what are the ramifications if, for whatever reason, I'm not on a position to use your proprietary bags? For example, if I were to just use a sturdy, non-compostable binliner, would you recommend the insertion of peat/coir at the start of a new bag (and a sprinkle after each use)? Thanks in advance.

You don't have to use bags - but the point is for you to not have to clean the container when you empty. The bags are compostable bags, 13 gallon size. you can find them locally.

Obviously this looks a little nicer but is essentially just a bucket with a fan. I have had a Toto bidet toilet for years it warms washes and drys if I had to switch to this contraption I will surely recognize it as a sign saying I’ve taken a wrong turn in life somewhere.

Ummm... Your bidet toilet uses water. This is for people that live off grid and do not have as reliable of a water supply, or people that care about conserving clean potable water instead of shiting in it.

Is there a way to convert this to a split system setup? I have a post and beam house so plenty of space under the floor to put a tank and build an insulated enclosure to keep the heat up if necessary.

Hello Lola - you can certainly run the liquid drain down to the basement. The solids however would not be able to convert. Separett used to make a model 9220 which had a remote holding for the solid waste - however it is no longer imported into the US. Best, James

It looks good. But every time I sit down, the blade opens, the thought that I will then be sitting above a pile of human waste, possibly for a while sometimes, really turns my stomach! What's the answer? Sprinkle some sawdust on top of every 'drop' ?

Hi Richard - Generally there is no need of additional material in the holding area - and ... it will just increase the frequency of emptying the solid waste container. To answer your concern more directly - there is generally toilet paper on top after each 'deposit' - minimizing what an be seen of you could see into the chamber when in use. I hope that helps.

Hello David - you do need to be sitting for the concealment screen to be open - or...push the seat down with your hand to open it to drop paper in. Regarding urine tank - the beauty of the Separett is that it is plumbed into the grey water tank or a drain field - not need to handle the urine to empty a tank.

No - we found most folks did not use the extra containers - generally just removing the liner bag and not taking the container out. The child seat was removed from the packaging as we worked to get the price below $1000. to be more competitive, since then, only about 10% of users buy the child seat. They are available as an extra.

Txtea Ranch yes. I’ve seen it in other reviews. It has it’s own tank and some biodegradable tablets are thown into it to prevent smell. When it’s almost full, you have to dump it in a regular toilet.

This unit has the urine diverted through a hose outside of the unit. The hose can then be directed outside of the house/rv into a holding tank, sewage drain or into a gravel trench.

Seems using vinegar as a cleaner - and occasionally using a bit of light bleach will handle the problem.

@@sailcolumbus6658 Thanks for that, but i mean a lot of plastics lose their clean white colour, i'm not sure if it's from the sun or just bad mixed plastic. It looks really ugly up against something white and i did notice you had a unit that the handle piece had yellowed and no cleaner can change that, it's the plastic. Light fittings and kitchen products seem to do that a lot.

I am prepping the plumbing for the drain it would be nice if they would say what size pipe the drain is I can’t seem to find that information anywhere I’m considering making it an inch and a half and then reducing it down to whatever size that needs to be later on but what a pain. Why can’t they just say what size the drain is in the description. I live off the grid it is a 5 Hour drive to go to home Depo So it’s not like I could just run down the street and get a fitting they really need to say what size pipes they are using for the drain and the vent So we don’t have to guess

Hello - the OD of the drain tube is 1.25 inch. The unit ships with an adaptor to connect the flexible drain tube to 1.25 inch PVC for additional distances.

Nope - same usage as the Villa. Just solid waste and paper in the holding area. The composting really begins upon removal. As human waste requires 6-8 months to break down, adding in the compost for the 3 weeks or so in the toilet - really does not get you ahead.

When the compostable bag in solid waste holding area is approx 2/3 full - it should be removed and taken to either your compost, approved solid waste disposal or incinerator. For carry out locations, the entire solid waste holding container can be removed for easier carrying.

Generally not an issue if the ventilation fan runs as recommended. In the few situations on livestock farms where there are high infestations of flies where issues were reported - sprinkling a bit of diatomaceous earth over the solid waste seemed to control the issue.

A couple of general rules to help - always sit when urinating, keep an upright posture as leaning forward will direct the urine stream toward the rear of the toilet, and giving new users an understanding of how the toilet is setup for urine diversion.

Honestly can't believe Separetts philosophy against commencing* composting in the bucket. Its a no-brainer; the goal is not complete chemical breakdown but to actively* engage natures aid in a)minimizing gross-factor [odors and visuals] and b) facilitating the even speedier breakdown once the system is emptied. Really disappointed by this, I'm going to have to modify my tiny to compost now which is ridiculous. There's just no getting around the fact that dumping where others have previously dumped is just uncomfortable - a composting toilet on the other hand nearly always feels fresh - its as if these people have never really tried one. Who can bear the sight of even dehydrated raw sewage - but with your technology/design + composting the entire game changes. This intransigence means you and your customers loose the synergy.

Here's what you may not be considering - it take human pathogens 6-8 month to become benign when composting fecal matter. There is not a composting toilet on the market in which the material is "ready to use" when the holding chamber is emptied - they all need to go into a secondary composting area to complete the process. So...would you rather take the material to the compost in a compostable bag or have to empty, clean and wash the holding chamber as in other brands to deliver it into the secondary compost area? As I've said in the past - that process of emptying the holding chamber is why Separett is the most common second composting toilet that people buy after experiencing the maintenance requirements of other brands.

@@FreeSpiritGear friend, you misunderstand me. Slober tastes&feels different when s/he is your lover. My point? Its more than the mechanics matter in this scenario; btw this comes from someone who's shat in the woods far oftener than the average. I know what even an inch of soil does to poop - completely disappears it, especially on a vegetarian diet. The thought of unsanitized poop anywhere inside an enclosed space is far more compelling than the inconvenience of not completely nullifying the ick factor. I don't have the facility to demonstrate it beyond the obvious. You probably won't but if you can find a camp site or some woods, go shit in a 4 inch hole in the ground and cover it with 1-2 inches of soil - walk away for 2 minutes and walk back in the area; if done right there'll be literally no indication! After a day? Forget it. Love the Tiny, think its brilliant but there's an inconceivable chasm I can't cross for its exclusion of composting features. Add a stirrer for compost and it would be bullet-proof imho. Its precisely what I plan to do with mine.

@@Kobe29261 Well - you'll see as you try it. We've been using a Tiny on the FreeSpirit for about 2 months. We now have two - but the first was installed in the guest head in the aft of the boat. Had crew on board for a month - who used and maintained the unit. Very positive feedback. I'd urge you to try the unit as intended for a bit and I think you'll find it works very well as designed. Putting the toilet paper (which is totally compostable) into the solid waste area absorbs much of the moisture as the fan dried it as well. So - try it both ways - see which you prefer. Will be interested in your feedback after using it! Be well!
