On average, about 10,000 people die from earthquakes every year. In 2010, a magnitude seven earthquake killed 222,570 people in Haiti, injuring 300,000 and displacing over one million.
So why don’t we know how to predict earthquakes yet? Truly understanding the mechanics of earthquakes is extremely challenging because the earth is opaque, creating a barrier to observation.
But thanks to machine learning, researchers can now analyze the acoustic data produced by the friction between tectonic plates. Here’s how it’s helping significantly advance earthquake science and could help create a model for earthquake prediction.
