I used to live in London, over 14 years, it was nice and refreshing my memories about the British food, I am lucky that I don't really miss it, as in Italy, the National Sport is Food. Just a little insider tip for you arments pie and mash shop is truly the best one in London I've tried Kelly's Menzies and about 40 other's all over London arments wins hands down Westmoreland road Camberwell, oh and if you don't eat it liquor then it ain't traditional pie and mash it's just pie and mash which you can get and any cafe in London most pubs and a few restaurants

Where did you get the idea that tartare sauce was traditionally served with fish and chips. It was unheard of when I was a child in the fifties. Tartare sauce appeared in the 60s/70s when people started eating out in pubs and it was served up with the exotic scampi and chips!! It was a alt and vinegar only - and yes it surely was wrapped in news paper but that was the outer wrapping, there was always a greaseproof wrapping round the fish.

Fair enough! I have had a couple of nice fish and chips in Cornwall and Scotland, but honestly, while the fish is fresh, the cookery is not always up to my standards. ;) I'm not sure if I mentioned in this video that Poppie's gets their fish fresh 6 days a week from Billingsgate. Such a great local business! And since fish and chips was invented in the East End of London, I personally think it's the best place to try them. But I always have room for many, many more...

But in my local pie and mash shop in Brixton, they would look at you as if you were a martian if you asked for gravy with your pie and mash! Everybody believes they know the best chipper there is. Have eaten a Poppeys its really good . But the best chippey I have tasted by far is "reel dingle" on the Dingle peninsula in county Kerry Ireland. Recently the have move a few 100 yards away from the harbor but when we went there about 10 years ago it was a tiny family run place. Standing room only and if you peaked over the counter you would see the hole in the wall where the boats would pull up to deliver the fish. Its been vote the best chipper in Ireland for years. It tastes too good i told my wife that isnt salt they are putting on it it must be coke . Its that good.

Poppies was better some years back. Not as good as it used to be. Best I've ever tasted though is on the Isle of Wight. Stotesburys in Newport. Amazing. The fish is even better than the chips. Its hard to get both great fish AND chips.
