I’m Native American and live on the Great Lakes. My family used to trap game and sell the fur pelts for a living and we would never ever absolutely not walk out on any ice without our spear. This is a device that you poke the ice in front of you to see what type of ice you are walking on (soft ice, hard ice, honeycombed, frozen snow or hollow layers) if your spear goes through then you know it won’t hold your weight. This was passed down through generations and it is a very reliable technique when done properly. We walked 1000’s of miles of ice and it never let us down. Just thought I’d post this because I believe it would have prevented this. Now walking on ice with a sharp pointy object may seem like a bad idea but it was such a valuable tool that you wouldn’t dare go on the ice without one
@josephastier7421Ай бұрын
Good idea to probe ahead of you. I found through experience that four inches of hard clear ice in cold air will safely support a man, though it will crack and boom. I once broke an entire lake into two pieces, with the crack running between my feet like in the cartoons. I've gone out on three inches, but not very far and only because I had to. I'm too heavy for two. :)

I was around 10 yrs old when i was ice scating in a semi remote area (few hundred meters from houses) on a small slow river that froze where people often go to ice scate and walk once the ice is thick enough (but not where i was, few hundred meters back close to houses).. anyway i was ice scating.. had full thick winter gear on me.. and was with few "friends".. at one point i heard the ice making scary sounds.. and it broke under me while i was ice scating quite fast... i went over 5m under the ice and about 5m down (i remember touching the bottom and seeing under ice, it was quite clear).. i remember feeling extremely heavey due to the thick jacket, heavy ice scates and other stuff i had on me.. because i was a good swimmer i managed to swim back to the hole where i fell through.. once there i tried to climb up.. but because the ice wasn't thick enough... i just kept falling through it until i reached the area where it could hold my weight.. (i spread my legs and arms to have less weight on the surface).. i was around 30m from the shore where i fell through.. so it took quite a while until i reached close enough to grab the rope that some people eventually trew at me.. all in all.. i survived and got out.. people that helped me brought me inside the house close by and gave me dry clothes and sat me next to fire.. until my parents came.. i went to the hospital later and other than having a few cuts.. i was ok all in all.. it was a VERY scary experience.. especially for such a small boy

Firstly, I'm glad that he's alright! However: "Comments like "He should've know the ice was this bad" etc won't be appreciated. The ice wasn't bad when he went out, it went bad because of the sun and when he realized he started heading towards the shoreline." I mean, someone ought to tell him if he couldn't figure that out himself. There's open water along the shoreline for god sake, and there's no way a thing like that just happens after a few hours of sun. The ice doesn't go from good to bad in a matter of hours. "We are experienced on the ice and know when troubles might occur, and still end up in situations like this." Lots of people die going through ice during springtime simply because they think they're experienced and know how the ice behave. Being out on the ice a lot and not going through is not to be experienced, it's just being lucky. Deciding to go out on that ice in the first place is just reckless.

If ice will go bad from a few hours of sunlight in -5 degrees Celsius weather then I think one can only conclude that the ice was bad to begin with. Having one patch of good ice where you start shouldn't be interpreted as a sign that it's good everywhere. How many spots did he check the thickness during the day? What were the numbers? Did that testing identify sketchy areas on the lake or patterns? I don't mean to sound like a know it all, because I am far from it. I just follow the instructions of the guys in charge of our lake, who are pretty knowledgeable. But this season when they shut it down on March 22nd the ice was still at least 15cm thick everywhere. It was a little mushy in spots but nobody was going through. I wondered if they were being overly cautious. But a short 4 days later there wasn't a single patch of ice left on the entire lake! Did they know what they were doing? Absolutely!

Good for him he got out of it. But in hindsight you should start to scream Help when you got energy and moment for it. And first if you must go fish in ice that is so thin and in spring sun, why dont you have a survival suit on? Yes they cost about 1000 euros but the fish arent worth of your life. But good that you had ice spikes with you, lot of people dont use them and that may be fatal choice. But good that he kept calm and got out!

He probably thought the heavy weight of the sled and equipment would go under since the ice was breached. Couldn’t have supported his weight now with the equipment also, he is much heavier soaked in water. Most likely just made sure because it’s probably expensive gear as well

Well you could say that the ice wasn't bad in the morning, but it was way to thin for fishing this time of the year.

Born for the second time! Thank God every day for keeping you alive! Please don't be offended by me, but with this level of intelligence, you only need to fish at home in the bathroom. I have more than 30 years of experience in winter fishing, and I can say that if the ice was good in the morning, then no amount of sun will melt it during the day. From the very morning the ice was completely unsuitable for walking on it... It’s just that you either don’t understand anything about it, or without experience, alone, in the spring (when ice is 20 times more dangerous than in the fall), you went without an ice pick on the ice... It's just crazy. I hope that this incident will improve your attitude towards your life a little. I was lying on my bed and almost had a heart attack while watching this video.

Thick safe ice with generous safety margins does not turn into a death trap in a few hours. If you find ice fishing worth to die for, by all means go ahead.

Many people wouldnt make it cus they are not fit enough and it would be a sad outcome so give that a thought before you try your luck on thin ice. Any experienced person will see that the ice is thin but lots of people go icefishing without experience...
