"Without this artificial price that we put on cocaine, I wouldn't have been selling cocaine," explains "Freeway" Rick Ross, the notorious drug dealer from the 1980s who is widely credited with introducing crack cocaine in Los Angeles and, eventually, nationwide.
Ross recently sat down with Reason TV's Zach Weissmueller to talk about his rise to-and fall from-power, the impact of crack on Los Angeles and the rest of the country, as well as his views on the effectiveness of the war on drugs.
"The drug war that we're fighting right now is a total failure," Ross says. "There's more drugs on the street of America than ever before."
In the interview, Ross tells of how he managed to build a cocaine empire by shrewdly saving and investing his profits, pioneering new business models, and switching from powder cocaine to crack cocaine. When asked what was so attractive about selling cocaine, Ross answers quickly: "The money."
Ross has a new autobiography out, will be featured in the upcoming documentary Freeway: Crack in the System, and is portrayed by Michael K. Williams in the new movie Kill the Messenger, which tells the story of the late journalist Gary Webb.
Ross was a source for Webb, who alleged that the CIA had a role in the introduction of crack to the U.S. When asked if he thinks the CIA was actively involved, he says, "It doesn't matter if they purposely planned on doing that. What wound up happening is it flooded the ghettos of America. [...] 600,000 black men are in prison right now for nonviolent crimes. Our prison industry has boomed."

About 10:30 minutes.
Interview by Zach Weissmueller. Produced by Justin Monticello. Shot by Alexis Garcia and William Neff.

So Let me get this right. We loathes crack and cocaine because it was destructive, but this guy who's perhaps more responsible than anyone to introduce crack to the underserved minority community is now a "celebrity" because he got rich now he's famous for documentary and eventually got off. Drug is the victimless crime hmmm

If you make a statement like that, you might wanna ad why you don't point out the culprits of this whole drug shipping into the U.S thing. If you can't point out: 1). The who is providing the drug. 2). The history of that specific group who provides the drugs. All of you demanding this and wanting that won't stop them to destroy this country, as they're not even pointed out...except by pointing at the government, globalists, the elite. They build more prisons every year. Soon this dump called America will look like the Soviet Union with its Gulags. Alexander Solzhenitsyn pointed out who these people in Soviet Russia have been. The same folks we can identify in our Great Country. Its definitely not the globalists or the elite. But the people who look like Gonzo from the Muppets Show, you know him, with his long nose. The guys who control Hollywood? It doesn't ring a bell? Well, you might read the excellent book: An Empire Of Their Own by Neil Gabler. He tells you exactly how the mass media was set up and who did it. And from there on it goes on...radio, television, cable television, social media. All controlled by the same magic noses. The media is a front to confuse folks. It eats up billions of dollars because the people who watch the idiot box and its extension social media are intelligent. If they were stupid not one cent would be invested into this flim flam on the screen.

@Curtis Steele As you probably already firsthand sadly know the crack epidemic is what low-key created the genocidal cultural shift within urban black America still going on now. Also it's what was used to replace the Black movement or Black Panthers & them in the 70's after MLK & Malcolm in the 60's. Or AKA the created Messiah or leadership model to follow. That J Edgar Hoover was talking about back then during Operation prevent the rise of a Black Messiah. I say all this yet & still nobody but the most High can decide who is & what is redeemable in regards to Rick Ross in particular.

In the real world, entrapment defenses usually work about the same percentage of time as insanity defenses, almost never. When a crime is committed the "people" want their pound of flesh for more reasons than I care to mention. Also, legally speaking, entrapment would have been more like he never sold a drug in his life, but the Feds somehow approached him and put him in business. The only way he could have got a pass would have been through jury nullification.

According to libertarians, the drug war has only improved the quality and volume of drugs consumed by users. Yet the cannabis available in Colorado pot shops is better than most of the dope on the street, while the prices are much higher than black market weed. Supposedly the Marihuana Tax Act of 1937 increased the cost of pot so much that most dealers went out of business, and users simply gave up the drug. Of course, the $1-per-ounce tax was only about $16 in today's dollars, while the 25% tax on Colorado weed accounts for nearly $100 of the price of some higher-quality strains.

Which is it?
@PostSurgeOperative
@PostSurgeOperative 9 жыл бұрын
Ozbrithian But if you agree even to minimal regulation of cannabis -- age restrictions on cultivation, possession and sales, for example -- you immediately face the problem of how much force a police officer can apply when subduing an unlicensed repeat offender caught selling it to an adult under the age of 21. Of course, the moment anyone gets arrested for violating those laws, lolbertarians will squeal like a stuck pig about the 'violence of the State' and other such nonsense. In Colorado, the pot tax is already at 25%, and people are selling it in the streets at lower prices than the pot shops. What are you going to say when an unlicensed dealer who has been repeatedly busted selling loose joints on the street gets injured or killed while resisting arrest? Are you going to claim that the reason he was selling in the street is because the taxes are too damn high? (asking for a friend) #EricGarner

@@rjw19 That’s not true. You don’t become a crackhead overnight. It takes a while. Rick is remorseful for what he did and has spoken around the world trying to steer kids away from the streets. He can’t go back in time and change anything but he has been doing what he can to help prevent it in the next generation. Look nobody put a gun to anyones head and said you are going to buy crack from me. It’s a personal choice. Rick was also a illiterate kid when he started in a time where there were next to zero opportunities for people in South Central LA.

+Stones Jones I think there's enough blame to go around. Ricky Ross was at the bottom of the food chain. Ronald Reagan, Ollie North and the CIA have a lot to more to answer for here than Ricky Ross. Yet not only were none of them ever held accountable for the death and destruction they are responsible for creating in Americas inner cities instead they got medals and promotions for it! We live in a truly sick corrupt country!

RealityCk Also very true indeed bro. But in this instance it is a video about this dude, and I find it weird that a person like this gets props for who he is and what he has done..destroying your own kind for money and have others even cheer you on. He shouldnt have given those bastards the chance..or at least not in his name, and if the next man would do the same etc.. Also the fame he seems to like instead of feeling guilt and remorse..solely about those actions.. But most definitely those you mentioned have a lot to answer for. And I hate them. And it is still going on, and destroying other countries aswell. And they got the people believing to fear lesser evils, and being busy sharing memes on facebook, twitter, and trapvideos and all sorts of low form of entertainment (including vladtv) It's a sick corrupt world indeed.

Thats why we do what we can, the people. Always help wherever you can, and condone this sort of behavior like this, and the worshiping of fucking people that destroyed many lives is insane! And of course I know how it is, when I was younger Scarface was the man to look up to, like many other cats, you wanna be hard so you can survive and find a way to deal with pain, but in the end being human, is the real warrior way. Too bad there are not many that can see it that way or dare to be that, since it is much harder than being a thug or even worse, an evil devilish politician or CEO of some poisonous company.
