With hot branding, a rancher actually causes a third degree burn which is very painful to recover from. A freeze brand destroys the color producing hair follicle and the hair grows back, just white. Mustangs in the US are freeze branded as well as many race horses.

Helped with a lot of freeze branding of horses, Done right the horses hardly try to pull away! Hot branding they jump ,they kick and they have to heal. The freeze brand does not need to heal and the white hair is totally pronounced in 4 to six weeks. Horse hide is much thinner than cow hide. The taste and smell of burnt hair avails it's self r through memory to me even after 20 years

I guess some folks haven't heard of the Farmfreund Cattle Immobilizer. Can be used on all livestock. Goes under the tail and a small electric pulse immobilizes the animal and they feel no pain and they don't jump around so injury to animal and people is eliminated.

People still do this to horses, become less common now because of microchips. It is still a necessary procedure in the dairy industry as what happens if a cow lost both of her tags? You would have no idea who she was, keeping records on cows in the dairy industry is vital for so many reasons, if you loose her tag number, especially in a big herd, it becomes a complete headache for the farmer/herds person. Medicine records especially.
