Why did you choose freeze dried food instead of canned?
@terrybattle705310 ай бұрын
I have both. If you just have freeze dried food you need water to make it. And water storage containers are not cheap. And neither is freeze dried food. But it does have a 25 year shelf life. So I have both canned food and freeze dried foods just to be well rounded. But I also store enough water to make all the freeze dried food I have. Starting out all I had was canned food.@@leroyjenkins6809

@@terrybattle7053 how long does canned food last?
@terrybattle705310 ай бұрын
The date on the can is more of a best taste date. If you search Shelf Life After Best Before Date. You will get a good understand just how long they can last. We keep a copy printed off just for reference. As long as the can is not dented or compromised. You will also be able to see examples of damaged cans. @@leroyjenkins6809

Regarding the 25 year shelf life....I am almost 70 years old.... I'll stick with my own pressure canned food, back up of cans and cans of store canned goods. I was low in fruit so I did what you said. Every time I went to the store, I would buy 4 cans of fruit. I am in better shape with fruit than I ever was. Last year, I went to 2 u-pick fruit farms. It isn't any cheaper but at least it wasn't picked in a foreign country and packed with whatever. I have frozen the fruit but plan on canning it this winter. Pressure canning meat is the easiest thing to do. I have beef, turkey, chicken, pork, hamburger. All so easy.

Yes, we can as much as we can out of the garden. Canning is great skill to learn.

Something to remember - you don't have to just use water to rehydrate and use your freeze dried foods. If you are making a soup or a casserole, they typically call for broth or stock, so use that to rehydrate your foods. If you are a home canner, you can make a recipe with a blend of your home canned goods and some freeze dried foods (think veggies) - use the liquid from any home canned item that is being used in the recipe and that can provide some liquid to rehydrate your dried foods (even if you have to add some water - if you have quite a bit of liquid from a home canned product, you may only need half as much water). If making a soup, you don't have to rehydrate the dried food before using it - just add it right to the soup and it will rehydrate as it cooks.

I have trouble with organizing my preps - yours look pretty organized, can you and your wife maybe do a video about organizing preps? I go looking in my pantry for thing, so sure I have whatever I'm looking for, and just can't find it!
@terrybattle705310 ай бұрын
I will try and get a video over organizing your preps. But the funny thing is sometimes my wife will just say ok it's time to reorganize the room. And we will take everything off the shelves and put it in the floor in groups and start all over on the shelves.

I have been looking for my sardines. I know I keep buying them. Hmmm, time to get organized.

we also have a working pantry . im guessing we have 3 months of freeze dried food . and about 14 months can food . im guessing half our food is home grown . wife and i are hunters gun and bow fish and gather . we dont store much water we have a spring and river . we also have other ways to cook , heat , lights etc . i laugh at videos ... i have 5 years of food but have no outdoor skills and no gear .
@terrybattle705310 ай бұрын
You have to be able to hunt and fish. And having the gear to do it, is just another way to be prepared. But I also know some people are not physically able to hunt. So I could see the need for those people to store a lot of food. I lived by a water source in Oklahoma but now that i live in West Virginia I live in town. It just made more sense to have stored water. I still have stuff to filter water because I love hiking for 3 or 4 days at a time. And I can't carry that much water.

We have to diversify. Otherwise it's boring food.
@terrybattle705310 ай бұрын
We totally agree, food boredom is real. We also have a very small on a shelf that has nothing but morale food. Well that's what we call it. Cake mix, brownie mix, muffin mix, popcorn, and frosting mix. You have to have it.
