The weight should be equal if both processes are done properly. If you could pack it optimally the volume of the freeze dried stuff would be higher but I don't think it makes a big difference. Freeze dried things are crunchy whereas dehydrated food tends to be a little leathery. As for taste it really depends on what you want from your food but for things that haven't been cooked/heated before the taste of the freeze dried variant will be closer to the original.

Freeze dried weighs less. You can buy a 12 oz bag of dehydrated apricots. The same sized bag of freeze dried apricots is about 2 oz .

IMO the biggest difference is dehydrated food will only retain approximately 70% of its nutrients after dehydrated. Whereas freeze dried retains approximately 95% of the nutrients. Can’t afford the freeze dry machine so I still dehydrate and buy freeze dried when they’re on sale at COSTCO.

But freeze dried food takes up more volume than dehydrated food. Almost by 50% , they can pack more dehydrated food with them. So nutrients and volume kinda crossed each other out in terms of of net benefit

Their hiking backpack can only carry so much volume of items. I would imagine they would want smaller items so they can pack more of it. Than bigger items but contains less calories.

Honestly it's a preference thing texture wise I prefer the dehydrated fruit it's more chewy while freeze dryer tends to be a lot more crispy and crunchy

I, also, was wondering when you'd go freeze-drying. The freezing creates a structure, then the water is removed thru sublimation leaving the sponge-like structure intact. Can't wait to see how well your cooked recipes freeze-dry and rehydrate. The rehydration should happen a lot quicker than just drying. You two are awesome!

Idk about them but as a hiker and hunter, I sure do. I also keep enough freeze-dried rations for 6 people to eat for 3 weeks in my car. The lot weighs less than 1lb 😊

It's good to have both if you can afford to do so. It will give you more food options while camping. Certain foods can not be dehydrated but can be freezed dried and vice versa.

I don't have a freezer dryer but you can't really dehydrate meat and dairy but you can with a freezer dryer. The freezer dryer also keeps more nutrition. If I can ever afford it, I'd love a freezer dryer. They are bigger but I think you can do more with the freeze dryer. But again that's only from what I have seen. I don't own.

Even more so is when you cook full meals. Instead of throwing in some dehydrated this and that... You literally cook the entire meal, the freeze dry. When you dehydrate, it's like normal. Say soups, chili, spaghetti ect... Make a double batch at home. FD half, enjoy on trail like it's just been made in kitchen

Freeze dried food can be rehydrated better than dehydrated food. Dehydrated food tends to get cooked as it dries out meaning it's chemically different from before the drying process while freeze drying doesn't have that issue.

Freeze dried food is such a good alternative for taking on hikes. I did my first longer hike last weekend (camped in the woods for one night at my destination, i loved it! :D) and took some freeze dried fruits with me. I haven't been hiking for long enough or have the money to afford either a dehydrator or a freeze drier and normally just stuff my cut up fruits and veggies in my oven with the door cracked so the moisture can escape but I really recommend buying some freeze dried fruits for hikes. They are awesome to snack on and even lighter than dehydrated food. :D

A good tip for the freeze dryer prep all your food take the trays and put them inside your freezer and then put them in the freeze dryer and it cuts the time in half
