Somehow Putin has convinced the older generations that he represents them against the bureaucrats in the Kremlin. They really believe he's just some kind of benevolent figurehead that listens to the people and goes and yells at the government to create change in their favor. It's really interesting how he keeps power. One of the reasons for this war in Ukraine was the fact that Putin was losing the younger generations. They don't give a crap about him, he's not a folk hero to the young people the way he is to the older people. I mean, he's the one who saved Russia from complete irrelevance when the USSR broke apart, but the young people don't remember any of that. He was just another corrupt bureaucrat to them. Putin had to grab their attention and become heroic to these young people. He thought he would do that by restoring lost territory. Sort of a giant backfire. After his election next year, I suspect he will go full Stalin and mobilize a million or more men and march them west. He needs a win or he's dead.

What I love most about this is that Putin doesn’t even LIKE the USSR. He admires the Tsarist Russian Empire, idolises the Tsars (his Number One idol is Tsar Alexander the Third for some reason, not Peter the Great), and he hates and despises Lenin. But he needs to appease the pro-Soviet people in Russia, so he lies about missing the Soviet Union. The Putin regime in my opinion doesn’t have an actual idealogy; Russians display Soviet and Tsarist flags next to each other. The Bolsheviks would have been enraged if they were still alive.
