You leave a stream of water running about a pencil lead thick, this keeps your pipes from freezing. If they freeze it can burst your pipes, expensive mess. Use a terra-cotta pot prop it upside down on bricks put a fireproof plate with votive candles underneath the terra-cotta pot. Stack metal or put nuts and washers on top of pot, rocks, etc. to create thermal mass. It will take the chill out of the room. Not perfect but better than nothing.

I'm older than you and your friends. But even when I was younger, I kept more food and Misc. things around for emergencies. I think a big part of it is because I'm a Country person. Extra food, water, blankets, candles, matches, oil lamps and a portable radio. Camping gear is a HUGE help also. Tablets, drawing paper, pencils, cards and board games. Extra food for my animals. Small sterno cans for cooking or heating up food, is a huge help. Plus solar lights and other misc. solar things. Much of the non food items can be bought from thrift stores. You pulled together and made it through a very difficult period. It has taught you a lot. They say the world is changing, (weather wise). So don't take for granted that this is probably a once in a life time situation. Be ready and have extra's for friends and neighbors. Great video...... I wish more people had posted their experiences. Well done! Oh, and get some Ice Cleats. You can get some dirt cheap ones that slip on the bottom of your shoes. No slipping on the ice or snow. No busting your butt on the sidewalk.

We just turned on the generator when we lost power when all this started in Houston for days , we were prepared having plenty of food and water and supplies so we just camped out for a week in the house in sleeping bags and it wasn't bad, it's getting closer to normal now with power back on for probably 80 percent of the state so hopefully a couple warmer days and we can move on until the next disaster .
@donm3844

@@sad754yt I know several who had bought a generator after our flood and were definately more prepared so even a small one just to charge phones ,turn 1 light on and run your fridge can be bought for around 400 so I am glad it's winding down and we're pretty much back to normal in my area
@kylehill3643
@kylehill3643 3 жыл бұрын
@@donm3844 The big issue is not the generator but the gas for it. Those generators if you look deeper into it only run like 10 hours and your going to buy gas each day. And so is everyone else who has one and you got to keep feeding that baby so you may have to drive quite a ways using even more gas to do so. We just did an 'expensive' staycation in Oregon to escape the ice as we were on the edge of the Portland crap: So as far as having a generator it just wasn't worth it and we racked up a bunch of reward points ironically doing so which we can use later in the other end of the year. Or if another disaster happens sooner.

@@kylehill3643 Hi Kyle,your correct about fuel in the generator thats why I bought a Tri fuel generator,it can use natural gas, propane or gasoline, I mainly run off natural gas because it's already in place but as a backup , I have a 100 pound propane tank I keep full just to power my generator for emergencys as well as a couple 20 pound grill tanks I keep full, plus I keep about 5 gallons of gasoline just for the mower but it's another option I can fall back on also , I have been thru several hurricanes now ,floods and have seen the power down for up to a week , so I have tried to prepare for several problems , the main issue is electric power being down, In Texas during the cold spell we had a natural gas issue also , so having the propane I just switched over to propane and it was as easy as disconnect one and hook my 100 pound tank up and just let it run, I have a found that 20 pounds of propane will run my large generator for about 10 hours generally ,so having the 100 pound tank got us thru the entire outage. we turned ours off in the evening when we went to bed and we would turn it back on in the morning ,so for us we were out of power for 3 days and we were back going after day 3 and the 100 pound tank worked good the entire time and we never had to refill it . I would recommend a tri fuel to anyone and just use propane or natural gas because the fuel never goes bad and it can be stored years and still start right up , I have found you generally don't need to run your generator more then 10 to 14 hours at a time, if I was someone getting a generator I would definately get tri fuel and smaller units will run longer but mine was powering the entire house, a small 5000 watt generator or one for camping might run 20 hours on a grill tank so just letting you know how we got thru and never had to leave the house for more fuel .

So sad seeing the suffering from people in Texas, hopefully help is arriving sooner and weather gets warmer. My suggestion pick a small room and stay together to keep warm. Melt the snow in big containers to let the sediments sink to the bottom. If you can get those filters from Brita, they are the best option. A candle light actually can warm a little bit in a small area.

That leaves out so many people that a road trip is required if I did have friends. In the same way some people are germaphobes, I am nauseated by the idea of anything which impairs thought. @KNIGHTFALL, there are some who do evening live feeds, and followers chat with each other while listening to the one speaking. So, ages I bought a small gas camping stove, and if something like this was to happen here one of the first things I would go looking for would be gas to power it. I think it would have been really helpful. Though my initial idea of boiling water to keep the place warm might have needed some raining in. Apparently rocks are much better for keeping the heat?

*How to keep and sleep warm without power:* 1: Go get some bags of volcanic rocks from the shop. 2: Heat those rocks on grill or fire (gas, coal, wood), outside! 3: While rocks are heating, identify the smallest best insulated room of the house. Without power an underground basement could become the warmest room. 4. When rocks are heated put them in multiple cooking pots with lid, move cooking pots into the room of choice as heater. 5. When your skin can touch the cooking pot for more than 10 seconds without burning, it's safe to heat sleeping bags and clothes on top of the lid without starting a fire. 6. Use a real bed when possible! The air underneath a real bed insulates your body from the colder floor. 7. Understand that clothes and sleeping bags are insulation, not heating. A cold insulated mass is still a cold mass! The human body is the equivalent of a walking bag of water that can store thermal energy, heat your body then insulate to preserve set thermal energy.

Texas has its own power grid separate from the rest of the US, so they can avoid federal regulations. The power companies in TX won't set up the infrastructure needed in this kind of situation because it costs moeny and doesn't bring in any money; they make more money gouging customers in critical times like this.

Judging from your symptoms, you might’ve had Raynaud's disease which is smaller arteries that supply blood to your toes become narrow, limiting blood flow vasospasm due to cold.

houston. our power was out for 24 hours, ig that’s only because we had a hospital in our grid. thankfully our pipes didn’t burst. before it started, we had left the window open cause we like the cold. we greatly underestimated just how cold it would get

@Joseph Beausigne thank you that. In texas, even the normal winters we get, will cause trees to freeze over a break off onto houses and roads. We get pipes that freeze here and there....but this storm got really bad ..much worse than what we were warned for and lasted much longer. And we definitely didn't expect no power for days. Grrrrr. In other winters if someone lost power...the companies would do whatever they could to get it on in less then 3 hours. But in this storm, they turned 3.8 million off on purpose and then couldn't get it back on.

Power goes out every day for at least 12 hours in my native country plus there is not water supply by the government, so please buy a whole water tanker every week. People also dig wholes in the ground to pull water, and often times water comes out salty, and when people drink that water then they get stomach diseases, and if they wash their hair with that water then their hair turns gray.

Abbott asked the EPA to relax the NOx rules so they could run the older gas turbines at full capacity. The EPA basically said screw you. It cost around $50 to make a megawatt of power. The EPA said if the old gas turbines were turned on, the EPA would fine them $1,500 per megawatt hour.

I know friends like to help each other but I really hope you all paid back the friend with the fear of having no food. If you have eaten a lot of her food she may be worried now. Give back to those who help. you all seem a very nice bunch so I think you did already but others watching may have taken and not thought because friends help out but favours do need returned. Heat around the heart is safest as that makes the blood warm to go everywhere around the body. Sorry to see such hard times for you over there.

difference is texas does not have the infastructure to support cold weather events. Power plants arent winterized, homes are not insulated to to keep out -20c weather. There was no power, no source of heat nor in many cases no running water. So there is NO comparison to Canada. I know, I live in Texas but spent the majority of my life in Canada
