I personally wouldn’t feel bad if someone mispronounces a brand name from my country because all languages have different sounds, sounds that might not exist in other languages. You pronounce things according to the sounds you have available in your language.

Brands themselves go that way. At least in France but I think also in Germany and the UK, the Czech brand Škoda ads all say "Skoda". To my understanding the Š makes a sort of "Tch" sound, so it should be something like "Tchoda". Peugeot ads in the US (when they were still sold ) pronunced the brand name as "Poojo" changing the first syllabe. On the other hand Xiaomi here makes sure you say their brand right by having a Chinese voice reading it "correctly".

I love Callie’s attitude because she’s honest about whether or not she knows the correct pronunciation of said brand. If she doesn’t know it she is not afraid of saying how we Americans would say it or better said, how we slaughter non-English words. I think that English speakers specifically from the US and the UK, tend to be quite condescending with nonnative English speakers.
@artemislogic5252
@artemislogic5252 Жыл бұрын
thats not true at all its the opposite, here in the uk at least, there are so many europeans, middle easterns, africans and asians here that no one is condescending to nonnative english speakers, or at leats its not common, maybe theres some random asshole who is but that isnt representative of the country, if people here were condescending to nonnative speakers, we'd have to be condescending to everyone on a day to day basis and it would be exhausting a country which is condescending to nonnative speakers as a part of their culture though are the french

@Yorgos2007

Fun fact: there was no such country as "Italy" until 1861. There were different kingdoms (Naples and Sicily), grand duchies (Tuscany) and even city-republics (Venice) on the Italian peninsula, but as a united country there has been "Italia" only since 1861. The modern official Italian language is strongly based on Tuscan, and is quite far for example from the Neapoletan language.

germans and french have similar pronounciations because the R sound has a common root. the Germanic R of the Franks mixed with the latin spoken by the Romano-Gaulic inhabitants to create french, so it's basically like a german speaker who spoke gaulish at home and learned latin in school. that combo gives us french.

I’ve never lived in/near a major city so luxury brands aren’t really a thing that I’ve really encountered much in my actual life. Rural people have different status markers. 😂 That said, if I see “Hermès”, my first instinct every single time would be to think of the Greek god and not the French brand, which Americans pronounce “her-mees.” I am curious about the correct Greek pronunciation of that word though if there are any Greeks who could share that info?

@@oktxlatn2158 it’s the alphabet that throws people away I think. And maybe the pronunciation and grammar. Hellenic is the easiest language when it comes to alphabet and reading. Each letter makes one sound, so if you learnt it once you’re done. You can read anything in Hellenic! The pronunciation… mhhh Hellenic is pretty flat. We don’t have ups and downs, like Italian for explains that is pretty singy-songy language.

tbh I think the other three was talking bad about the US but I think the US pronunciation was fine, every country is different so the other three countries shouldn’t say it sounds weird or be offended. In Singapore, we pronounce it the same as the US (the girl on the far left). The other three are literally making her feel bad, but overall ok

I've consistently heard Porsche pronounced both ways in English. I'm from Michigan so it's not especially German here. Also I've never heard anyone say Yves Saint Laurent like that although we don't pronounce it exactly correct. Definitely not Hermes... I've always heard it pronounced close to accurate but I guess she doesn't listen to rap. Although I thought it's ubiquitous because I hear most of my exposure in passing.

In the USA, dropping the last syllable from Porsche is a relatively recent thing. Everyone used to say Porsch-uh with two syllables. Saying Porsh without the e was the cool slang way to say it, like saying Jag instead of Jaguar. It's just that younger people have only heard the slang way now.

Ok last thought, I've never heard Americans say a lot of the ones reading it with English pronunciation. If someone knows the brands and actually cares about them they would use a closer accent. Which in a lot of areas we could care less about these brands 🤷🏽‍♀️ the American did a good job using the actual English pronunciation but we use other language loan words accurately all the time. Like we use quesadilla all the time and pronounce it in Spanish though it would be read different in English... If that makes sense

As of now I can recall 2 tongue twisters in Italian🇮🇹 about the tr's. One is "Tre tigri contro tre tigri", three tigers vs three tigers. You just repeat it very fast until you mess it up by forgetting the r's in between tre or contro. The other one is "trentatré trentini entrarono a Trento, tutti e trentatré trotterellando", 33 trentini entered Trento, all 33 trotting. A Trentino can be an inhabitant of Trento, or a person from Trentino, the region of which Trento is the capital. The last one especially is quite sadistic if you ask me

Actually you don't HAVE to roll the "r" in Italian, lots of people here have a "French r" (in Italian it's called r moscia which kinda sounds like weak r). So it's really a matter of accent. A French who says ferrari with the right accent won't sound that different to an Italian, but for French the most difficult thing to do is not to put the accent on the last syllable 🤣

Indeed I only discovered that quite recently listening to the Italian national radio "Rai2", I was initially a bit puzzled : "did they hire some people with a French background ? Or is that just an artificial comical/pretencious forced effect ? But after a while I realized that it most certainly was a regional accent. Also with that "r moscia" I had the impression that some vowels were a bit less accentuated than in standard Italian and therefore sounded even more French, like an Italian making fun of a French speaking Italian ! Also do they pronounce in that accent the twin consonants like in standard Italian ? I have a doubt since it sounded so unlike standard Italian.
