Is it mandatory to use the 30 gauge wires?

I used the same 30g wire used for lacing to make the stamen, mostly to reduce the number of wire sizes needed to buy for the design. You could use a 28g wire instead. 26 would be more stiff and not as pleasant to make the twists.
