I worked in that dime store starting the summer after my junior year of high school. I walked a mile one way from my home in West Baden. I continued working there my senior year and for three more years including Christmas and summer breaks from college. Lots of fun memories. Even though I lived there I learned things about the area that I had never heard such as tomato juice originating there. I’ll never forget the smell of sulfur in the air there. I never could understand how anyone could bear to drink something that smelled like that! If only I could go back in time to those fun and simple days!

I tell people, “I wish I could go back to 10 years old, with the things I’ve learned.” But then I remember all the painful times too, and am glad they are already behind me. The secret is to keep filling your life, with moments that make you smile, just as big! I’d told a friend of mine about the therapeutic qualities of stinky mineral water, claimed by the resorts. Even soaking in it could help sore muscles! Well she went to Trinity Springs, outside of Shoals, to a place called Mustering Elm Park. The mineral water flows clear and free there, and she soaked her ankles, that had been giving her trouble. Within only minutes, she felt better, like a miracle! So she bottled up some water with plans to soak in it at home if the pain came back. The next day, I called to see if the ankles were still better. They were, but even without drinking the water (I wouldn’t suggest it), she blamed it on a raging case of diarrhea. She got a cure for bad ankles, and a colon cleansing, all in one shot! 😆

Many years ago, I took the French Lick Railway tour. They pointed out what was left of the first Campbell’s soup factory, and his boyhood home. All I could think was, “Imagine owning that house and having tourists come by all the time for a photo!”

The Hagenbach Circus was involved in the disasterous train crash where the circus train znd freighy train collided in Hammond, IN.

I didn’t know anything about the Hagenbach circus until I visited this museum. Growing up in Indiana, I knew about Ringling Brothers, and the circus at Peru, Indiana. That was about it! That museum at French Lick was a good primer.
