As a native English speaker who has studied French, I think “choir” looks like a French word, and I can’t blame them for pronouncing it the way they did. I’m surprised they didn’t all comment on how the spellings of English words often seem to have no relation to their pronunciation. By the way, the last word is spelled wrong, at least on the screen. There is only one “h” in the word “psychotomimetic.”

I have so much respect for the French people. As an American visiting overseas, I did my very best to learn, speak, and respect their beautiful language, but they would go above and beyond if I struggled (and genuinely politely, with no snarky backhandedness) usually help out by speaking with me in English afterwards, while still encouraging me in a positive way to continue learning French. I have nothing but nice things to say about the people I met there.🙂

@michaelweiske702

Tbf, the English R is quite different from what other languages use as R. Most languages form R using the tongue similar to L, while English uses the lips similar to a W. This is why languages with no R at all tend to default to L (see "Engrish") and why Elmer Fudd uses W instead of L (see "Waskiwwy Wabbit")

@@axo_lolt4083Your written English skills are good, from what I can see. French is just as hard for native English speakers, getting to a point where you can read it isn't that bad, but getting to a point where you can actually understand French people talk is a whole other challenge due to how fast French people speak.
@axo_lolt4083
@axo_lolt4083 5 ай бұрын
@BasePuma4007 Well, I think it's a matter of exposure to the language, we indeed speak really fast and shorten words quite a lot... Immersion into a french speaking country is certainly the most efficient way to learn, which might be a bit scary tho (speaking from experience, I recently went to Germany and I found out the spoken German on the spot 🥲)

Speaking is very complex mechanically as well as acoustically. We listen and detect certain sounds, rhythms etc while dismissing others. So sounds in one language would be dismissed, but would be essential in another language (H sound in English for example is often dropped by Europeans). To make these sounds, we work certain mouth muscles, tongue position, and many other factors. Each language would require different muscles etc, making it nearly impossible to pronounce certain foreign words unless we learn to shape our mouths etc accordingly. And even if you do, we need to train our ears to hear the required sounds that are important to that language. It can be very very difficult. Bravo to all these bilingual participants trying to say difficult English words while in Paris, to someone who doesn't appear to be able to speak any French.

Well not really new. In french school you always learn two stranger languages, English being the first most of the time and participants are all young so they should still a relatively fresh memory. But yeah ig it's always hard to Europeans to pronounce and spell in other languages using the same alphabet that they're used to use from when they were kids, since they are the same letters but with different pronunciations.
