French vs. Spanish - Which Is Easier To Learn?

100% agree. Not only is French pronunciation far harder to learn, but native French speakers will typically do one of two things when you attempt to speak to them in French, especially the older generations. 1. They will realize that you do not have French mastery, and immediately switch to English for expediency. 2. Troll you by continuing to speak French at native speed and will not continue to address you unless you are able to reply. 😂 Obviously, this is not really 100% true. Just a very broad and comical generalization. To be honest, I've had that second outcome more in French speaking Canada than in France. Spanish speakers are generally very encouraging no matter where, in my experience, and seem quite fine with talking to learners slowly.

As someone that first learned French at an intermediate level. And then after I began to learn Spanish it was definitely easier. I think the grammar of French is more complicated than the grammar of Spanish language. It also helped quite a lot that my mother language is a romance one .

As a Spanish speaker who learned French at school and now by myself, I recommend that you learn Spanish first. Understanding spoken French took me a long time (actually kinda the same time it took me to understand spoken English). And French has things in its grammar that Spanish lacks like: être vs avoir with compound tenses, liaison, pronouns en and y, many silent letters, aspirated h you have to learn by heart, etc.

I'm a native English speaker who's been learning French for a few months now. I purposely chose to learn French first because I knew it would be more of a challenge. Once you get down the basics and get accustomed to hearing and seeing the language, it becomes easier. I plan to learn Spanish next year. I already know quite a bit of vocabulary and it's very easy to read (to me). Thank you for the video. I'm so excited to soon be fluent in 3 languages. 😁

That’s why I said in the beginning, that the video is for those wanting to learn both or either language! It’s then understood that you learn them because you enjoy them in the first place. The order makes it just easier. That’s it. No one said we should only learn a language based on the usefulness or how easy it is.

Most people, at first impression, think French is difficult, but for me, I think it is easier. Once you get through the pronunciation part, the rest will be easy. Spanish is more complicated because of its grammatical structure; at first, it looks simple because of the pronunciation, but as you advance, it becomes harder. For me, since my native tongue is heavily influenced by the Spanish language, it is simpler for me to learn Spanish than French. 😊

English is loaded with exceptions. There are basically not solid rules in English. Everything is memorization, which is also part of what makes French more complex than Spanish. The spelling and the pronunciation are not bound.

**MY HONEST REVIEW** As someone who discontinued French after 4 months and became fluent in just 6 tenses (out of 12) and has now been studying Spanish for almost 3 months, here's my take: **i'd like to preface the reason why I didnt want to continue with French was because I disliked the culture and generally the people, thus I just could NOT get into it. With Spanish, however, it's a whole different story. Kind people, amazing culture, everything. I love it. Ok, ahora, vamos a empezar!! easier pronunciation: SPANISH DEFINITELY. I can pronounce French words without an accent, however it takes more conscious effort for me to do so. If I'm not paying attention to pronunciation, I can accidentally let an r slip through xd easier grammar: nearly the same level of complexity, but with French having way more irregular verbs than the spanish language as well as the 'y', 'en', and 'dont' pronouns which rival Spanish's only complex 'se' pronoun (which is pretty easy to learn imo) as well as confusing tenses in French with Spanish being more consistent, I'd say Spanish is easier in this aspect. Although, you'd better watch out for "que", "de" and "a". (the different ways to say "to".) Te voy a tratar bien. Voy al cine Tienes que estudiar? quieren ver esta pelicula. Do you see the pattern here? "a" is used to refer to a place you're physically going to, while 'que' is almost always exclusive to just the verb 'tener' or deber (implying you have to go do something). With querer, you don't have to add a preposition between the verbs. It's not "Quiero a cachar" or "queiro de cachar" it's "quiero cachar". easier to understand spoken: Spanish. It took me only 2 months to fully understand spoken Spanish (native speed) while with French I still cant understand it. This is because unlike French(vomit), Spanish is phonetic and words are almost always pronounced exactly how they are written-this gives you a cheat code to understanding the words when they're being spoken since you cvan always determine how they're spelt out just from hearing them alone (if you know the meaning of the word). French is also spoken much, much faster than Spanish and they tend to mash words together (i.e je suis becomes 'chui'). It's also hard to follow along with the inconsistent and extremely similar pronunciation of words (i.e 'je dors' and 'j'adore' sound the exact same so hearing sentences like this in real time would require contextual information). Can I understand a French video/podcast at native speed after 4 months of studying? No. I'd be lucky if I can even make out just a single sentence. Can I read French fluently? Yes. Can I understand French spoken in real life? Sometimes, probably even better than through screens. Maybe it helps to have that extra close proximity to French speakers' conversations. easier to understand written: French. This is because Spanish often omits the subject pronoun (i.e "yo veo" would just be "veo"). Sometimes when I'm reading spanish I have to carefully consider each word and can't skim them in the same way I can do with French because without the subject pronoun, I wouldn't know if 'habria' is referring to someone else or me. easier to write: French. Because French has more similar words to English, you can easily remember and bring to mind a specific word while you're writing.

French pronunciation is harder to learn but it's much closer to Italian than Spanish. Like for example the verbs are practically the same but the pronunciation is different.

Im from the Philippines and I agree spanish is simpler and easier to pronounce since we have more than 5,000 loanwords that came from spain during colonization and french is far difficult to do it especially the Pronunciation that kinda flips my brain upside down and tounge is starting to develop a muscle😂

I consider it extremely relative whether one language is more important than another. Of course, if you are into travelling or doing business with a specific region, then one may be more relevant than the other, e. g. in Africa French, in Latin America Spanish. Beyond that, if you relate to a country in particular, the most reasonible thing is to learn the language of that country in order to integrate the best possible way. Then even Hungarian or Ikbo may the language to learn.

I started learning French when I was very young, 5 hours a week where it was not allowed to say a single word in Spanish. So everything to do with the liaison, the ain, in, en, on the u, œ, etc and endings not being pronounced was inserted in my inner brain without any effort. But for people ,over 20 years old, I will not recommend to learn French. French is like French people, it is like driving in France trying ronceoss at the Arc du triomphe , it is like the French revolution. It is simply a chaos. You will meet French people having arguments about French grammar fighting what is wrong and what is right in the French language! 😃 Learn Spanish, Italian or Portuguese. In fact, they are so similar that sometimes I think it is almost the same language and I speak all of them. Même, y compris, le français !

As a Spanish Teacher in The Bahamas, I completely agree it is far easier to learn Spanish than French. Having had to take classes in both languages in my first two years of College, I can truly attest to everything BrowncoatBlue said a year ago. My first experience with using the French I learned with a native French Speaker was horrible and turned me off from learning the language, Currently I'm learning Italian and Haitian Kreyol but I am not at all interested in returning to French.

For some people, myself included, I actually think the Spanish pronunciation can be more difficult. I can pronounce both, but sometimes the flipped/rolled R is difficult if you’re trying to speak quickly. Especially when there is an L, T, and R right next to each other. I never have that problem with French though. But if I speak a little slower, both are about equal.

I don’t think so at all. I’ve been using both languages equally. I think you’re even more likely to use French internationally. Everywhere I’ve traveled I have always used French because of people I met who spoke French. it’s spoken in so many countries. Also, professionally It’s been just as useful as Spanish.
