This video shows the bowl of the wineglass being blown after having been lowered into a dip (or optic) mold. Next, a small gather of glass, ribbed from having been pressed into the same mold is added to the end of the bowl thus re-softening the vessel wall. Air is forcefully blown into the blowpipe to inflate the newly-added glass. The stem is given its final shape, a foot is added, and the wineglass is completed. Learn more about this object in The Techniques of Renaissance Venetian-Style Glassworking by William Gudenrath renvenetianstyle.cmog.org/nod... 🍷
Between about 1500 and 1725, Venice was nearly the sole supplier of fine luxury glass to the royal and aristocratic, the wealthy and powerful, throughout Europe. The Venetian government went to extreme measures to protect its lucrative and prestigious monopoly by isolating the highly skilled workers on the nearby island of Murano and severely restricting their movements. However, with the promise of personal freedom and the hope of fortune, they gradually fled the lagoon to set up workshops in a variety of locations on the Continent and in England.
The Techniques of Renaissance Venetian-Style Glassworking - renvenetianstyle.cmog.org - presents detailed 360° photography and high-definition video related to objects from nine glassworking centers influenced by Venetian style as researched by master glassmaker and scholar William Gudenrath.
The resource is a follow-up to Gudenrath's popular Techniques of Renaissance Venetian Glassworking (2016) also available free online at renvenetian.cmog.org.

Can we make these at the MYOG experience? That would be super cool!

While I like the enthusiasm, this is an incredibly difficult piece to make, even for most professional glassblowers. Even with Bill's instruction, I don't think anyone without considerable experience could make one of these.

What is the viscosity of the glass like when it’s that hot? I imagine a thick syrup cooling to more of a silly putty 😂

Hi Peggy, when it's really hot, it does feel a lot like a thick syrup, but as it rapidly cools, you can actually tap your metal tools on it and it will sound exactly like tapping a regular cold glass. Thanks for watching!
