Single Americans tend to go on dates with different potential partners; it’s to gauge how compatible they are. Once we pick the most compatible partner (and if the partner feels the same way), then the relationship becomes official (dating). At this point, the couple decides whether to have an exclusive or open relationship (a majority of American romantic relationships are exclusive by default). Tl;dr: Going on a date does not mean that the two people are dating. It’s to see whether you’re compatible as a couple.

I speak as a french woman, because i think belgian and french have a kinda similar philosophy when it comes to dating. I would consider it rude and hurting if the man i met on several dates , let's say for 2 or 3 weeks, at the theatre, restaurant.... was having the same relation with another partner, at the same time. For a french person, discovering that the other one is going on dates with someone else is for most people a big no no, as it shows a lack of commitment and appears as untrustworthy....

What ?! Americans date many people at the same time before to be inclusive! How awkward and embarrassing... when do they get to the conversation: “hey hunie I realised I liked you a lot so let’s stop cheating on each other and let’s start an inclusive relationship”... lol
@Jamieisastar5 жыл бұрын
Not all Americans do this but it's apart of the overall dating culture. No one thinks of it as cheating, you see the other person as free to do what they want as you get to know each other. You can have conversations about it, though many consider that as you're falling in love with them and that pushed them away. So you gotta be careful who you talk to, making sure they are mature enough to be open and honest with you if they are seeing other people or developing strong feelings for just you. Then at some point you just say, hey let's be exclusive. Many young people hold off on this though since we are all working on getting jobs and second degrees just to afford basic life things. It's a lot of stress so having a significant other is thought as a distraction or a drain of resources in some cases.

soniaustralie it’s not like that. You simply text to a couple of people and maybe go out with a couple of them to dinner or something. Then you decide if you want to pursue one of them exclusively.

I've never heard the non-exclusive relationship thing being considered normal in American culture. In fact, things like polyamory are pretty looked down upon and considered illegal by the law (marriage wise). Most people will end up being monogamous. So I don't know if they meant dating multiple people at once, or if they just meant people date alot of people before settling down with just one. But America has alot of religious communities of all types, and in most of them it's very taboo to date more than one.

How long have you known this theoretical man before you went on a date with him? Your idea of dating may be more romantic than others, here friends and sisters can go on a “date”. Don't assume every American is "dating around". As an American, I think there are many of us who take partnerships seriously and don't graze the fields to see everything that's available at once. The people who do that are probably using dating apps like Tinder and are very noncommittal/just in it for sex. I certainly think that it sometimes takes a few weeks/months for things to get serious, but I think there's also people who move quickly because there's a clear connection. Everyone's different, I suppose.

Cataleya In America (where I live at least) someone can go on dates with more then one person, but generally would not say they are dating someone unless it was exclusive. They would say they are “talking”. “Talking” is a period of escalating romantic interest and involvement. Someone can “talk” with more then one person at a time but after a certain amount of “talking” it is expected they will drop the other people. When one party feels like they want to ensure the relationship is exclusive, they ask to be exclusive. Generally this is when someone gets called a girlfriend/boyfriend. It is also worth noting that many people consider sleeping with someone else while they are “talking” a dealbreaker.

When 2 people start dating, even before the first kiss it's exclusive. But it becomes "serious" when it's official, meaning when they announce it to family and friends that aren't to close or didn't follow the beginning of their story. But the younger generations are doing things more and more like american even if it's still "rare" : they have to say it's not exclusive, it's not assumed.

Hi! I'm catalan, so my country, which is Catalonia shares a border with France, and not just that, you can consider the line a bit blurry, cause of Occitania, that area is known as Southtern-France, Northern-Catalonia, French-Catalonia... In fact, there's even a catalan town called Llívia surrounded by France. Anyway, what I mean by that is that I know and share some french culture, so I understand why Dominic's got surprised when he told them that Lisa doesn't eat cheese, basically because I love cheese so much and it's a big part of my catalan-medterrian gastronomy, so I can understand the reason although I can also understand why she doesn't, just a bit though, I love cheese too much😅. Oh! About the double kiss, I thought that which french people was triple, or at least in my french family, my father has some cousins in Montpelier, and I always struggle with the triple kiss, I always go for the double and I don't remember about the third one until the very last second.😅

Everyone’s wondering if Americans date a lot of people at once. Once we are in a committed relationship we don’t do that unless that person is a cheater but we do talk to multiple people because we have this thing called the “talking stage” but that’s mostly for american teens. But we have “hoes” idk how to explain it loll but it’s what we teens have. It’s like extra people we talk to before we commit to one person. We’re not like the French where y’all go on on date and already dating or a French guy will tell you he loves you in like the first week. Americans can do everything but until they both agree to being each other’s boyfriend/girlfriend we are just talking
