It's not even actual underwear. It's just the bottom of a leotard or built-in underwear. Some do wear actual underwear that was of the time (big frilly ones or big silky ones). Some wear actual shorts underneath. Very rarely, you will see actual modern knickers To me the whole thing is pointless aa the thrill is lost in the modern era. I'm sure folk got excited at the beginning of the century at seeing the bottom of a leotard, but now? Lol

​@@nezkeys79It wasn't a leotard they were wearing then. It was split drawers. They didn't have a seam at the crotch for ease of going to the bathroom. You couldn't take them off without having to take of multiple layers (petticoats, bustlepad/bustle/hoopskirt, corset etc) so they mostly covered when legs stood together and when skirts were that long it was fine. When a dancer however kicked her leg up, you would see everything, hence why it was so scandalous. It wasn't until hemlines rose that you saw seams come about in popularity, of course it did exist before but it wasn't popular, drawers weren't even worn in general until the 19th century excluding colder places where they were sometimes worn for warmth.

It's clearly a leotard with a skirt over it like many dance shows (I've worked as a pianist in dance shows and theatre so not just saying it from this video either). If you meant generally at that time I am pretty sure they wore big frilly / silky knickers underneath (which is way more exciting than the bottom of a leotard lol)

@@lilalili6106 There is one thing that i have learned about part of French culture since watching video clips as that one above,it is that culture sees nothing wrong in having topless dancers mingling with male dancers in front of a mainly foreign audience,and that many of the topless dancers are foreign,also their culture is having males changing the costumes of the topless girls coming off stage and the males dressing them up with other costumes for their next stage appearance,also it is so hypocritical for topless dancers coming off stage and covering their breasts when passing male back stage screen changers,that is what i have seen by watching video clips from the Moulin Rougue,the Lido-De- Paris and Crazy horse,i have also seen a video clip from Crazy Horse showing topless girls dressed as nuns with a male dressed as a priest,all French culture when it is in fact part of the sex industry just like Playboy.and please reply in English as you could understand what i was saying in my comment.

@@johnquinn7068 You don't know much about the Moulin Rouge and this famous dance at the very beginning was made to annoy and provoke the bourgeois, "la goulue" invented this famous statement of petticoats to show her ass in the nose of these aristocrats and when changing costumes there is nothing abnormal in the fact that a man helps to dress or undress the dancer it's completely ridiculous to see pornographic and hypocritical culture and frankly I'm very proud that men can help to undress women for the short show on this exchange out of nowhere and useless good evening.
