“Frenzy” (1972) is the penultimate film by the master of suspense, Alfred Hitchcock. The story about a cruel series of necktie murders fills entire London with terror… The film was well received and gained some Golden Globe nominations, including best picture, director and music (by Ron Goodwin). It is no mystery that Hitchcock initially hired Henry Mancini to score “Frenzy”, however, he did not think that the genuine dark and atmospheric music would be quite right for his film. Unfortunate for Mancini, who thought this sound would not only compliment the film but also fit into the musical Hitchcock-legacy and please the director. Film music fans over the world were hoping for an official release of both scores for ages, since each of them did not see the light of a release. It would take until 2022, when Quartet Records finally put the two entire recordings into one single release, making it possible to finally compare their different attempts and overall variance. Also celebrating the centennial of composer Henry Mancini (“Mancini 100”), we now take the chance to listen to highlights of this important recording. Enjoy!

Hello, Fred! Hitchcock returns to his homeland but still with the stigma of finding a " pop sound " for his film. Fortunately, Mancini managed to distance himself from his usual " party music " and wrote a score where he preferred to balance tension and melancholy, supported by brass and woodwinds at the front ( interestingly, certain sections for brass have a similarity with the which Goodwin would still do ). Mancini 's vision of the story, however, was not sarcastic as Hitchcock 's, which resulted in his replacement. Even so, it is very interesting to appreciate Mancini completely outside his comfort zone and showing himself to be extremely efficient! Thanks and bye!!

If you don't know the film, you might check it out, it's good. Ron Goodwin's used score will be featured here in about a few weeks and you will get a totally different sound for the same picture. :-) Best! Fred

The cascading sound reminds me of films like where eagles dare, battle of britain, and blue max. Good stuff

I have been waiting for this forever... ever since I heard that original theme decades ago. I love Mancini's music, and this would have been quite a feather in his cap. Too bad the music was too effective... like Bernard Herrmann's rejected score for "Torn Curtin" which Quentin Tarantino used in "Once Upon a Time in Hollywood" but I digress. Many many thanks.

Mancini is in good company with Hitchcock rejecting Bernard Herrmann's score for "Torn Curtain". The score for Frenzy was perfect. Mancini knew his music. Ron Goodwin who's score replaced Mancini's original did a marvelous job w as well. Two extraordinary composers two wonderful scores.

When it comes to Alfred Hitchcock it's the ecstasy of crime, not caring about the censorship of the time.🔪🩸 Research: Hitchcock's penultimate film, in which a female nude appears for the first time and his style is almost reversed with sadism and violence. The black humor of the great Alfred manages to make us side with the murderer. Great sequence and extraordinary camera movement on the occasion of the second murder. Presented out of competition at the closing of the 25th Cannes Film Festival. According to producer Laurent Bouzereau, at least three scenes were deleted from the final cut, evidence of which was found thanks to the discovery of still photos. A sex scene between Blaney and Babs in the hotel room, footage of a woman fleeing half-naked from Rusk's apartment at night and an alternate ending with Blaney having dinner at Inspector Oxford's house with his wife. The still photos are present as extra content on the film's DVD. Hitchcock renounces the famous divas who had represented the unattainable feminine ideal. With a choice of discontinuity he resorts to theater actresses with a common and modest appearance. The simple, everyday gesture of tying a tie becomes a way of killing: everyday life and madness have blurred boundaries: "The tie is the murder weapon and is the leitmotif of the film, as also revealed by the famous, enveloping movement of the camera which goes around the victims, squeezing them as if in a "lump in the throat". The theme of strangulation has always attracted Hitchcock and is present in many of his films. A serial killer who kills young women by strangling them with a tie previously appeared in the 1944 film noir "Bluebeard." The blurring of the boundaries between normality and madness are among the most engaging narrative devices.
