0:21 My Premium Travel Credentials
3:43 Four-Wheel Sterling Pacific Suitcase Review
So, when I unboxed the Sterling Pacific 40 L Four-wheeled Carry-on, I was quite impressed.
→ Packaging and Build Quality
First of all, the packaging was nice. It came with a scratch or dust cover, and it just felt solid right out of the box. As the name implies, it can hold about 40 L of volume and weighs 12 lb or 5 1/2 kg.
→ Wheel Performance
So, you can see the wheel is mounted in a metal aluminum corner. Usually, this piece is plastic. Every element-including the fender in the middle, the metal hop cab, and even the treads on the wheel-were all designed so they're super smooth.
→ Maneuverability and Durability
In my experience, as our suitcases often become harder to maneuver when they get heavier, but the Sterling Pacific 40 L case works just fine and remains very maneuverable even when it's heavy.
- Frame: 6063 Aluminum
- Body: 5000 Series Aluminum, 0.9 mm thick
- Corners: 5052 Aluminum, 1.5 mm thick
This aluminum alloy features magnesium and chromium for greater durability, which is especially important because suitcases and stuff are more easily dropped.
→ Comparison with Other Luggage
Now, the locks are made of a material called Zamac, and I would have even liked it more if it was brass, but they also have to look at weight because it's luggage after all.
→ Visual and Interior Design
Visually, the luggage has an old school appearance and, on the inside, you have a nice Alcantara-style lining. The lining is very classic and, with the Italian full grain leather handles.
→ Warranty and Modular Design
They have a lifetime warranty, and the case was designed and built in a modular way so parts can be easily replaced, which I think is really, really nice.

I always check my luggage and avoid a carry on bag. It is a pleasure to spend my necessary airport time unencumbered, with just a few things in the pockets of my sport coat.

@@gentlemansgazette again this might be a US thing :) Whenever I travel in Europe and I'm asked if I want to check in my carry-on bag for free then I certainly do so, just keeping a small backpack/handbag with electronics on me. I wait ~5 minutes to pick it back up, which is nothing compared to the comfort of not having to find space for it on the plane.

Desperately need an European substitute of Gentleman’s Gazette, because, while it is a very high quality online periodical for my interests, and is otherwise flawless, it is too American centric in its choice of brands and deals. Many of the brands Gazette promotes or discusses make no sense to buy in Europe.

Why does it make no sense to buy the brands in Europe? These days you have things like www.myus.com where you can buy something in the US and they ship it to you at a reasonable cost, no matter where you are located...

@@gentlemansgazette for example, I was seeking to buy starter shoes and had found your video about Acemarks. Now I regret buying them. Combined costs of duties for a US product, shipping and waiting made that purchase unreasonable. They claim importing European leather, which is also a subject for duties and shipping costs to the US, that go in the end product’s price. So overall this resulted in a lot of overpay (double logistics and duty costs) that could have been avoided, and I could have bought much nicer shoes for the price. Unfortunately, Reddit tables and guides were indigestible for me at the time, and still feel quite cumbersome now. KZbin format was the only one I could deal with at the time, and it was the Gazette that inspired me to seek better style, so I took your advice seriously. But now I wish you provided a starter option for shoes that would make sense for a European too. Frankly, I didn’t realize they were American shoemakers. Importing shoes to Europe is like importing oil to Saudi Arabia. I realize this now; but back then I was just eager to buy. This carry on suitcase is American too, and first results in Google are American. It is unreasonable to order it from USA, as it would be much more expensive. Maybe they have a few European dealerships, but I can speculate that the price there is higher. So I would appreciate if you provided local options for European viewers. Although I would understand if you didn’t do that, since it would increase amount of research needed and the operational costs of making videos.

I always bring with me blutooth trackers, medicine (ibuprofen, paracetamonl for fever, nosedrops, etc), a foldable extra light backpack in case I buy stuff and it doesn't fit in the suitcase, rfid protection for my cards, my phone is switched off and I use an old one with a prepaid card and a paper copy of my reservations, travel documents, insurances and plane tickets. One never knows when the electricity could be out. Unfortunately, there are sketchy airports where sometimes not only other travelers, but the workers themselves steal, so I am vigilant at the security check, at any queue, at the WC, anywhere! and I lock my suitcases and bags.

Love the design and the idea that once the product is eventually discarded, it will be easily repaired/ recycled. Not like the poisonous menace that plastic suitcases are. Looking at you Samsonite and Rimowa! This luggage is suitable for the business and first class passengers for sure! Or for specific companies, like the British Airways which allows for 23 kilos cabin bags, so a 5 kilo suitcase, that offers sturdiness and four wheels in 40L volume is a good deal. For the economy travelers a 2,5-3 kilo suitcase is a necessity because most airlines allow for 8 kilos cabin (hand) luggage maximum. For instance - Austrian Airlines.

Raphael, this is a good video. But for me after 25 years of working for an airline and traveling for work, I’ve learned differently. I never check a bag. Too many times it will get lost. I’ve never seen a 4 wheel bag that one of the wheels didn’t explode at the most in opportune time. I use a TravelPro two wheel 22” pilot’s bag. I also use a 5.11 Rush 24 in which I carry my electronics and a change of clothes (in case I’m forced to check the pilot’s bag at the gate). I take the most versatile mix and match clothes I’ve got. So I can make the most different looks. I pack light and do laundry on my longer stays. I wouldn’t check a bag with a knife. That will force TSA to open your bag below, then you run the risk of sticky fingers. The Sterling case looks nice, but the wheels look like the most vulnerable point. Also, with SS rivets in two different classes of aluminum, I’ll bet there will be dielectric corrosion going on in a few years. I like the rest of what you take. Good job on the video. All the best-Mark

I know the travel pros. My inlaws would only use them., but they stopped using them now. It sounds like you are not really going on trips where you need different clothing, or for a long time where you need different outfits, like Black Tie, sport coat, suit, hiking gear, skiing etc. I have been checking bags my entire life, and once my bag didn't make it and 3 times it was damaged. Works for me, but I understand that everybody is different, and I am not trying to convert you, just share my experience, and you take as much of it as you want. Thanks for sharing your perspective.

@@gentlemansgazette Thank you for the reply. I use the TravelPro because they are what the company issued. My first one lasted about 7 years before a catastrophic zipper failure at DFW forced me to get a replacement at the employee store there. That replacement is still going strong after 22 more years. My work travels required suits, and if I could get away with it, sports coats and slacks. The only time I ever pack heavy is when I’m going on a cruise. For leisure travel, it’s usually button down shirts and chinos with some sport coats, ties, etc. for just in case. The thing about working for the airline is that I know the dirty underbelly of it. I’ve been on all aspects of operations. I’ve seen and been where you can’t go and know what goes on. Because of that is why I always carryon. I am glad to see your prospective of things and happy that you do share your experiences. Again, all the best-Mark

For replacement of your carry-on travel bag you want to replace, I would focus on a vegetable tanned leather. These are the same leathers that are used for saddles that just get better with age and can be repaired. I have items made and vegetable tan leather that are over 50 years old and look beautiful. Looks gorgeous as ages on a vegetable Tan leather item regardless of what color you have it died.

Your travel kit is very stylish, especially the various cases and pouches. However, I come from the school of ultralight hiking so I put everything in ziploc bags. Minimum weight and bulk. How do you stop wet toothpaste residue from your toothbrush, or just water, getting all over your nice leather bags? The plastic bag was invented for the gentleman travelling with an electric toothbrush... I think you will have trouble flying out of Britain with more than five bottles of liquids, however small they are. I'm usually travelling with just carry on, so one great trial to me is that you can't take a corkscrew on British Airways unless you check it. You can have folding, non-locking a pocket knife with a blade under 6cm onboard, but if it also has a corkscrew it's forbidden.

While the allure of teleportation still dances on the horizon, modernists are already packing their virtual bags, leaving the rumble of jet engines to echo as a nostalgic relic of a bygone era.

This is a very maximalist approach. I personally try to carry less and less. Solid recommendations though.

You can't deny the functionality of an Apple watch - Raphael's stated before he's not much of a watch guy, but an Apple watch gives access to functionality you simply don't have on a classic dress watch

@@gentlemansgazettethe added functionality of the Apple Watch is what makes it a staple of my everyday wardrobe. I also don’t think they look bad especially with a face that mimics a classic dress watch, a silver enclosure and a leather strap

Agree. Wearing a mini-iPhone or a mini-Android on the wrist is so tacky

Over 2 grand for a suitcase 😂 that's WILD

Of course, this is not for everybody If you total up the cost of travels over 30 years, and you spend $144k vs $146k it's not that big of a difference. Also if you have to rebuy other suitcases because they break and cannot be repaired like polycarbonate, you spend probably more. At the end of the day it is a cost per use thing.

You have to look closely but also made in China. Hey but the handles are covered in Italian leather!!! I like my Monos that has aluminum corners and great wheels.

I can’t stress enough how old-fashioned and tacky a pinky ring is. I’d never ever hire a person who wears one, unless that said person is over 65 years old.
