The confusion with UK knife laws is that knives aren't illegal like most people think... what makes a knife illegal is it's intended use, which is why it's legal to carry kitchen knives home from a store. It's all about common sense in how it's stored and used. For example... if you have a 6" knife in your pocket when walking around for self defence then it's illegal because the intended use for that knife is a weapon but if you carry an 8" bushcraft knife in a backpack to use in a campsite then that's perfectly legal because a knife is simply a tool nothing more. The law is you cannot carry more than a 3" blade on your person when in a public area unless you have a good enough reason for doing so, which basically means you can carry a knife over 3" if you have a good reason to. so it's just common sense

This is a very smart comment and this is something I have though of too but then it's down to the cop that stops you to determine whether your reason is good or not regardless of you seeing it as good. What is a good reason? - It's for work. - It's a tool and I want to carry it. - I'm a knife reviewer to I need to use them to be able to review them (again for work) It's all stupid.

That's a solid carry! I've been looking into Acebeam flashlights recently so I'll have to try one out soon. With the TJB ellis, I actually think that it works better as a left hand carry if that's what you wanted from the reversible clip. The way it is on the knife and how it comes out of the pocket for 2 hand opening I genuinely find better in the left pocket. Glad you like the video!

I’ve always wondered this. People always argue about the “safety” but then never demonstrate how a non-locking knife can fold back. I’ve actually tried to fold my Victorinox knives back on myself and I can’t see how it’d happen.

I guess it depends on the angle you're working with. A very long time ago, like 25 years, I was trying to remove the rubber coating on a panel that was underneath a counter, because behind it was wiring that I needed to get access too. I was using a folding knife that was my EDC at the time. I caught it at the wrong angle and it folded into my thumb slicing straight into the top of my thumb and about 1/3 of the way through my thumbnail. It was a shock, but it didn't hurt that much, I just wrapped it in toilet roll and carried on but after that I switched to a locking knife for my EDC, until they were banned. I carry a locking Stanley knife on me now because it's more useful for what I do and the cops won't give me too much trouble about it if they stopped me. We just got a new Labour government though and I've heard that they're coming after anything sharp, so my EDC is probably going to be relegated to a spoon in the near future!
@TedHowells
@TedHowells 5 ай бұрын
This saved me trying to explain it haha but yes it is more when you are doing things at an angle to is slightly off and one little slip will make it bite lol! @@TedHowells What the UK governments never seem to appreciate is that every time they ban something they create a brand new criminal enterprise, it only serves to impair law abiding people and actually funds crime. If this new government goes ahead and makes fixed blade knives, swords and machetes completely illegal to buy or sell there 's nothing stopping anyone from popping to Homebase, picking up a strip of high carbon steel, cutting it into 5 pieces, shaping, sharpening and heat treating them, popping some rubber tape on them for a handle, you now have 5 knives you can sell to criminals that are more or less untraceable because literally anyone with a hacksaw. a grinder, half a clue and some propane can make them, someone with more tools than that can make them to a really high standard. The notion that the law can be used to impede criminals; a branch of society who make a life and career out of breaking the law is beyond stupid! But, we know they will do it anyway, because that's what they've always done 🤷‍♂.

An array of a half dozen Victorinox knives depending upon what and where I am doing (unfortunately the green Soldier model with the locking blade now stays at home); and two Leatherman multi tools - PS4 on my keyring and the Crunch too stays indoors because of it’s locking blade ( have thought of removing the blade but then would need to carry a separate blade which defeats the object). Others knives under consideration are the knifeless Rebar and the T4 (because I like it and it looks like the locking mechanism can be disabled - if not, it’ll be another stay at home knife). Always have one knife on me, often two, and can even have three at the same time.

I disagree with you about slip joints. I actually find slip joints to be more dangerous. The reason being, when they do move, they move on their own - they fire out suddenly with a spring force, as if with a mind of their own. I've had accidents due to this. I find double-detents and friction-folders much safer because they move only under my own control. I've been going through a similar journey, obsessed with trying to find the perfect UK-legal EDC. For me, it needs to have either a thumb hole or flipper tab for proper one-handed opening - nail nicks and thumb studs are both awful. Double detent is preferred. MUST have some way to let me resist closure of the blade: 1. a front finger choil (with smoothed, not sharp corner), 2. a flipper tab, that acts as a finger guard, or 3. an extended tang that I can hold with my thumb/palm. I prefer the front finger choil out of these three options, as that also lets me close the knife easily, by pressing on the back of the blade with my thumb while holding it on the other side with my index finger.
@Ramesiel
@Ramesiel 5 ай бұрын
I also find half-stops like shown here with the James Brand knife to be a bit useless... At that position, they could already cause injury. If it's a slip joint knife, then I much prefer it to have a quarter-stop instead.

I know this is a few months old now but we've got similar carries and I DEFINITELY appreciate a knife with a proper pocket clip. This is the second time the Ellis slim has been recommended so I'll have to give it a go. The other one i'm looking at is the realsteal Luna which has better steel (or so i've been told i'm not a blade steel guy). In the meantime i'm rocking my old Boker g10 and swapping in my CRKT ceo. I lost my gerber dime but it did a brilliant job for years. But I did find it was struggling with anything above emergency use, especially the wire cutters and pliers getting chewed up easily. Check out the nextool mini sailor, similar setup but next level capable. Same notebook but I put mine in a leather cover with cardholders and a pen loop mainly cos i have far too many damn cards. One thing I've been looking to upgrade is new handkerchiefs so i'm bookmarking those brushlove ones for sure. Merry Christmas man!

For safety in a UK legal knife, what you want is a good finger choil. It won't stop the blade folding, but it will stop the blade from folding enough to cut your finger. That's far more important in my opinion that the mechanism, a good choil negates the risk of self-injury. Spyderco do them particularly well I think. The Hoo knife you briefly showed doesn't have one, but the v3/v4 Hoo does have a finger choil and is much safer IMO (also entirely legal and anyone who calls a Hoo knife an 'automatic' is badly misinformed).

I think it would actually be difficult for it to close on me. Real Steel Luna, perfect little knife. Again, can’t see it ever closing on me-I’ve abused it too. Bro, you've gone from the Civivi Foldis detent knife (£80) to the even more expensive James BLAND slipjoint (£93) , when you can get the far superior and safer Spyderco UKPK, Urban, or Squeak for the same money. If you really want to splash out on an exceptional knife the Spyderco Lil"Native is great. A review is one thing, but your choice of personal carry knives sucks. Even the tiny Twisted Assited Tulip (£60) is far safer in the hand as it can't close on you. I have all five of those knives but my most regular EDC is the £35 Black Fox Bean Gen 2, which despite being a detent knife still can't close on you if you know how to use it. It's small, simple, strong, safe, discreet, and £35! Not super slicey, but stout and reliable.

Please note: whilst a blade under a certain length is technically legal this is entirely dependant on the police and prosecution service believing you are carrying it for a justifiable purpose. It is illegal to carry ANY object which can realistically cause harm regardless of blade length if the police believe it’s with the intention of causing harm or damage, the onus is on you to convince them otherwise. I’m not a lawyer but am aware people have been prosecuted for having hammers, hair clips (!), and a wrench. Blade length is NOT a guarantor of legality in the UK, that’s not how our laws are written or interpreted.
@MPD90
@MPD90 3 ай бұрын
Please actually learn the law before instructing others on it... The exemption for non-locking, sub-3-inch knifes in the UK specifically says you DO NOT need ANY reason to carry it. No justification is required. Now of course if you use it for the wrong purpose or state your intent to use it for the wrong purpose, then you're going to be in trouble, but you don't need to justify carrying one of those knives at all. The 'good reason' element is for blades falling outside of the exemption (i.e. locking, fixed or >3 inches).

Tf is a hank. (Note the full stop, not a question mark.) This video is the definition of a complete DB reviews. Calling the business owner by their first name, open palm slapping the product when you don't know what to say or do with your hands. Ooh, and all the gurning at the start of the video, can't forget that too😉

Hank? Home Depot? I thought you said you were in the UK? Also, I've had numerous penknives in my life and not one of them has ever closed on my fingers when using them. I've no idea how you manage to do this.

cite your evidence, cos it wasn't Labour that killed 100000s of British citizens, or got backhanders from their business cronies after buying unusable PPE, or partied during the pandemic, or any number of other things during their administration
