As a very frequent-flyer, I've made a lot of mistakes when it comes to what I pack and in this video, I want to share my current everyday carry for travel having been refined after 200+ flights, THIS... is my Travel EDC.

As you very quickly see, a travel everyday carry setup can change quite drastically from a daily EDC kit when you're at home. For me, this video is less about the individual items, and more about how boarding over 200 flights and spending more than 1,300 days abroad over the past decade has taught me to carefully consider the real-life implications of life on the road and what to bring to make life go as smoothly as possible.
This means that my travel needs are likely different from yours, but the thought process when deciding what items to bring and carry everyday are the same - and THAT's the most important thing - to be able to assess our own needs effectively and choose the best tools for our unique use-cases.
What's shared in this video is the travel edc that I've refined over the past decade and only contains the best travel accessories for my types of travel - mostly for business in cities, urban leisure, and some (but definitely much less) outdoor trekking and camping.

Here is a great advice regarding passport. Always always take a picture of you passport in case it get lost. It will make it so much easier for you to get help when you have a picture as proof of your passort

I'll second that, and add the following: If you're American, get a passport card. Even if you lose your passport, you'll still have proof of American citizenship on your person.

Also helps to write down your passport info (or some physical copy) if you need to go to the consulate to get a temporary passport. They don’t let you bring in your phone 🥲

When using the hotel safe, use the single shoe trick. Put one shoe in there too. That way you when pack to go, and you pack up the other shoe, you will ask "Where's that other shoe?" Oh yea, it's in the safe with other important things that I don't want forget about and leave behind.

I told my buddy to do this when we were traveling in south america...well he didn't do it and left his passport and stuff in the hotel so we had to go back hahahah he got lucky the front desk had it for him

Make sure you carry your passport at all times during your trip to Japan. It is a legal requirement and local police may ask to check your identification (they still do spot checks on the street from time to time). If you fail to do so, you may face legal consequences. Hence, don't leave your passport in your hotel room.

@@AbhikamaP No, only passport (tourist) or residence card (foreigner living in Japan). If you happen to run into a check by police, they will also check your status (visa). Your driver's license or ID from abroad don't show that of course.

Really? Has it changed since covid? I never travel with my passport because it can be robbed. I lock it up instead in the hotel and carry a photocopy of it just incase. I've been Japan twice now and never needed to show it

@@smaao It has always been the same. COVID didn't change their policies. You just happened to not get spot-checked by them but if you do and you don't have your passport with you, you will be in quite a complicated hassle.

Another great use of the binder-clip is to completely close curtains in the hotel room. I have been in too many rooms where the curtains don't come together and will allow a beam of sunlight, streetlight, etc. to come through which is almost always in my eyes while sleeping.

hotel rooms usually come with hangers that have clips on them that you can use to bind the curtains closed. The hanger clips would be too bulky for hiding documents though

I was expecting something like that, not to mention quick repairs, etc. I know if I were to try to hide my passport like that, it would only be a matter of time before I'd leave it behind. My own ability to forget something is generally a bigger threat than the baddies.

3 It looks sleek among the three and the color makes it possible to be paired to multiple outfits that you might have during your travel. Black doesn’t show “stains” or dirt, too. You might also consider having those “collapsible” water bottle that you can just hang or put inside your sling bag. It personally helped me a lot when I travel.

This is all great advice! Although be careful in Japan as it’s one of the only countries in the world where non-resident foreigners must have their passport on them at all times. If you’re stopped by the police, they may ask to see your ID and the visitor entry stamp (sticker) in the passport. If you happen to have a Japanese residence card, there is no requirement to keep your passport with you.

Think he said he was goibg to Taiwan and Indonesia as well. Taiwan has similar laws to Japan so bring along your passport there as well, in Indonesia you can leave it at the hotel.

I also always have a current international drivers license, however I’m yet to encounter a rental place that actually wants to see it 😅 „Most people are good“ is also one of the best things to bring to a travel destination. I firmly believe that this believe and some common sense has kept me/us safe, but also curious on a lot of individual travel adventures. Have a great trip!

One more item to have on your trips abroad is the identification / medical strap from Road ID. Recently, on a trip to a foreign destination, I had an accident and I lost some blood because of an injury. Ofcourse, the first thing that got stolen in the commotion was my wallet with my passport and cash. Thankfully the person couldn't take my mobile, since it was in my trousers with a zipper on and the zipper pull was under my backside and I'm heavy that way. The doctors at the local hospital had to give me a bottle of blood, my Road ID bracelet had all my medical conditions mentioned on it along with my blood group. Very very helpful when you're unconscious or unable to answer. Especially in a foreign country.

The self defence flashlight tip is great. Avoiding a fight is an absolute must (even at home - I'm in Japan and would 100% not get the benefit of a doubt over a citizen) and that's an item nobody could misinterpret as a weapon. Passport is the one thing that always stays on me, in the most discreet pocket I can manage. BTW Japan has improved leaps and bounds concerning cashless payment (especially during the pandemic), I barely carry cash anymore. You already have a Suica card, it'll cover quite a bit, as well as touchless Visa cards and Apple Pay/Google Pay.

The Bellroy Travel Wallet is 160 dollars, the Bellroy Note Sleeve is 90 dollars, the Travelers journal set up with clip and two pens is over 200 dollars, the Airpods are 200 dollars, the Iphone is 600 dollars and that clip is probably like 40 dollars, the flashlights are over 200 dollars together. In total if you were to replicate this set up with these exact products its easily going to cost you around 1600 dollars. This is absolutely luxury. But yeah, I guess since he has a one dollar binder clip it was enough to make you think it wasn't.

Thanks for covering the flashlights! I normally will travel with four lights, one on my person, one in my carry-on/personal item and two in my checked. I recently was in a cat 5 hurricane and they came in handy!

Personally speaking a flashlight is one of those things that people don't think of when it come to essential gear. I've been advocating for a long time that more women should carry tactical flashlights on them rather than using keys, learning martial arts or any other form of self defense. A good tactical flashlight (at least a 1000 Lumens) with strobing mode from nitecore plus being able to sprint a few hundred feet/meters is good enough to get out of trouble. A lot of assault comes from opportunity rather than planned, so running away just makes it way harder to do anything. I personally carry two, a nightcore thumb for daily edc and the insane TM9K for just about any night activity or day trips.

You are SO right about hotel safes, Maurice. Not only do staff know the universal code that opens all their safes, but so do former employees and friends of employees who tell their other friends. Often the universal codes are brilliant, like 1234 or 0000. All the safes do is make it easier for thieves to find all your valuables at once. Fast in, fast out, hit the next room. Efficient crime is the best crime, is it not?

In a previous life I was out about 40 weeks a year, mainly in the US but often to Europe with short notice and ended up with a really similar system. For flashlights, my personal preference was/is a stream light protac dual fuel. They accept either 123 or AA batteries and really take a beating. Not quite as friendly as a rechargeable light but accepting two types of battery made it easy to keep running anywhere.

The most key part of my travel kit, which I use for EDC as well, is a little shoulder bag that goes around my neck/shoulder and sits directly below one arm. All of my essentials (including passport) are kept in it, and it's roomy. I can wear a jacket over it, and it's completely protected. I take it everywhere I go and never leave it behind, or take it off. It's always directly under my arm and jacket. Because of how the strap wraps around too, it's hard to steal as the strap will get tangled with my clothes.

The small pen in my Bellroy travel wallet (great wallet!!!) has been picked up recently in security screenings at 2 airports within the last 6 months, requiring a full search of my carry-on backpack. Before that, not a single problem 10 years of using the wallet. So, my advice is to remove the small pen from the wallet.

The Leatherman Style PS multi-tool is an awesome TSA safe option for frequent flyers. It’s basically a Leatherman without the knife. Passes TSA inspection all the time. Highly recommend to add to anyone’s travel EDC.

I love the PS, but be aware that, while it is TSA-friendly, some countries won't let you travel with pliers.

My only problem with the choice of flashlight is the obviously "tactical" aspect of it. I carry a similar light daily (Fenix PD36 TAC), but if I were bringing it with me on a trip, it has to go in the checked luggage. This is because TSA may see it as a weapon, since it has an impact bezel. This is an issue for me since I am a big believer in traveling as light as possible and avoiding checked luggage, but something like that Nitecore T4K may bypass the "tactical" appearance just a bit and be a more viable option for me. I prefer a light with an instant on strobe, though.

Another tip to carry (maybe in carry on bag) is a small night light. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve banged my self up bumping into furniture in the dark trying to use the bathroom in an unfamiliar hotel room. Night light helps so much.

Have spent 8 of last 32 years on travel for work. A lot of good advice here, one thing missing is the fake wallet. Real wallet goes front pocket of pants. Second wallet contains several 1,000 Mexican peso bills, Greek drachma bills and even some French franc bill, along with a couple of old hotel key cards and several of those fake credit card you used to get in the mail when they tried to get you to sign up. It also hold the evenings bar cash. This one goes in the back pocket and is used in public; for any pickpocket eying you it seems like a good target. Passport also goes in front pocket in a Ziplock bag. Also have a travel laptop, has never been in contact with work or personal computers. Files I need for travel go on to a thumb drive get loaded on to the travel laptop and then thrown away, one use only. Anything I need to download get printed out when get back on a stand alone printer that only knows the travel laptop and then scanned/OCR on work scanner. Separate travel phone with travel WeChat account, separate travel email address. Spent over 2 years total in China and can't remember the last time my safe wasn't gone through.

The time that my entire family could not enter Antigua because we could not find a working pen either on ourselves or in the airport. My MIL picked us up at the airport and could see us stuck in limbo for like 40 minutes while we searched for a pen. SMH....I experienced the worst case scenario, I lost my passport while abroad. I was pretty sure it wasn't stolen so I was able to retrace my steps and realized I left it at a bank while cashing travelers checks. The bank had forwarded it to the police station but I wasn't allowed into the central police station (it was Ireland during "The Troubles") so I had to find a local cop who could go get it for me. Luckily I found one and after buying him a round at the pub to say "thanks" got my passport back. It took a couple days and meant that a lot of my trip had to be rearranged but ultimately I learned a few things: people are in general way more honest than I gave them credit for and always, always, always double check where my passport is before moving on.

For the passport bit. Make sure to get a passport card, it will be recognized as the same type of identification in case you lose your passport. You can't fly with it but it is something I keep in my wallet while abroad.

@@marlinchen6315 happened to me this summer. Didn’t do anything more than a photocopy to get my emergency passport. Still had to fill out all paperwork, passport picture, fee, everything. Made no difference at all.

@@marlinchen6315 luckily they had a passport picture kiosk at the Milan office I had to go to. What it helps is to have that lost passport’s number so they can look up your prior one. But you still have to do everything all over again. Took several hours but was thankful it could be done same day!

I always carry my passport/cards/cash in a shirt with an internal pocket. No chance of it being stolen unless physically attacked. I would not like to leave it in my hotel room clipped to the curtains. I would always be thinking about it. thanks
