Such an incredible sound. I remember seeing this CV-340 at Juliana pretty often.

Not sure how many hours I logged in this particular plane, but one of the dozen or so I've flown. I worked at Rhoades when this tail did the DAL-SHV contract for BAX in the mid 90's. Always sad to see when another one has flown west & taken her crew along too.

What caused the crash of this plane? They are working on the port engine here. I remember reading the loss was apparently caused by an engine fire but heard no more.

Sound is incredible in flight. I do remember these flying when living in St.Louis, Mo. back in the 50s & 60s.

This aircraft has the old fashioned radial piston prop engines, and has three bladed props. They start up differently than the turboprop engines. On a piston prop, the propeller only turns slowly when the starter is turning it over. When the engine actually fires up, the prop rapidly goes into a spin, and a lot of smoke comes out of the exhaust stack. When you see this and then the turboprops, the way the engines fire up reveal the difference, between a piston prop, and a turboprop. While a piston prop engine is basically like the engine of a highway vehicle, a turboprop engine is a jet propeller engine. I wonder if Lynard Skynnards Convair 240 had it's original piston prop engines, or had it been upgraded to turboprop.

Wow. I've watched this video several times I just noticed this plane crashed and the pilot/owner was killed. I'm stunned! I'm a big fan of P&W R2800 radial engines and enjoyed watching the engines fire up here. When I was a kid, American Airlines flew Convair 240's and Eastern flew Martin 404's into my hometown airport & both planes had the same engines & props. Just read they went into the water & sunk after an engine fire. This is so sad. Anyone know if the plane is still on the bottom?

At 1:36, could that be the ignition vibrator making all that buzzing noise, or a really noisy fuel pump? Seems like the vibrator was in the cockpit to the left of the Capt's. seat on the side wall?

Thank you and may he rest in peace. I'm sure he was very much fun to work with and was a wonderful pilot. I've read engine #2 may have caught on fire which contributed to the loss of this great airplane. Any news as to watch actually cause this horrible accident?

I believe this is a Convair 440--rectangular engine exhaust area. 340 had two round pipes.
@omepeet20068 жыл бұрын
+herbergreen When they were new the 340 had two round pipes, just like the 240. The 440 had the rectangular exhaust, which was quieter, factory installed. The 240 and 340 models were often upgraded likewise.

IMHO, This was way too much smoke at start up. Many vintage radial engines smoke a bit, but this was a lot for a flying plane.

@RedArrow739 жыл бұрын
This is the same kinda plane that killed Lynyrd Skynyrd's singer & guitarist, isn't it?
@boblackey19 жыл бұрын
+RedArrow73 Very similar. The Skynyrd plane was a Convair 240 built in 1948 for Western Airlines. Many of the 240's back then were flown by American Airlines. This plane is a 340 which has the same engines, Pratt and Whitney R-2800 radial piston engines, but this plane is slightly longer. And there was a longer version than this called the Convair 440. The Skynyrd plane ran out of fuel. The pilots have no excuse for such error. But they paid for it with their lives as both men were killed. But so were Ronnie Van Zant, Steve Gaines and his sister Cassie and a road manager. Many of the other band members were injured as you know.
@SeanWhite7 жыл бұрын
RedArrow73 340 and 440 where almost identical they differ mainly in the hydraulic system. they are the same size.
