Fresh bait is the best bait. I go fishing for catfish on Boone lake in my Old Town Kayak and catch some fresh gizzard shad and then catch a nice channel catfish.

Nice catfish. If you put a sail on that Old Town today you might hit 15mph on Boone 😂. Those 44mph gusts are rough especially since it may drop to 28 degrees by 4pm. But 60 Tuesday with rain. Stay safe. 👍🙏🎣

I was trolling ( not for cats) when a cat hit me there on the line directly off the stern, on a bobber, with only 8 foot of line beneath the bobber. this cat was hunting in less than 5 foot of water, in 40 foot of depth.

Hey Michael, it looks like we will be moving to your general area around September. I was wondering, if you were going to pay for a slip around the Johnson City area, which lake would you choose? I was primarily looking at Watauga, Boone and Holston but am open to suggestions. I typically fish Bass, Walleye and Crappie, but would love to learn how to fish stripers and catfish as well. I’m an older guy, so launching a boat every day by myself gets a bit more difficult every year so I’m thinking picking one lake and getting a slip may be a better option now.

Hello, I don't know about slip pricing but if you fish Boone it's a tougher lake. Not so much largemouth but a better smallmouth population, no walleye that I know of. Of course the stripers are on Boone and they are fun but you have to be patient, trolling is better but spot fishing is possible when they're hungry. As for Watauga, definitely more structure for largemouth bass and they have walleye but you probably won't see one unless your trolling or fish them during the run. Watauga is also more beautiful and larger with less traffic due to size and the lack of homes around the lake. I have not been on South Holston yet so I have no opinion on that. I am fairly new to this area also so I'm learning as I go.

To be fair, I fish Wataga Lake way more than south Holston Lake, but I think they’re both great options for what you’re after. I would look into fish Springs Marina as well as Lakeview Marina. Both are on Watauga Lake.

I've had the best luck on smaller rainbow trout, as cut bait. If you know someone with a pond or where to buy them, they work great.

@MichaelKaal-TriFisher I have caught many using it right beside bluegill and shad, and it never under performs. And you are welcome, if you catch the trout on rod and reel you can use them for bait.
