I adore your channel. I watch every single video - several many times. We’re also in the northern Midwest and it’s such a treat that everything you plant is hardy for me. Your aesthetic is one of my favorites of ALL the garden/landscape channels. I hope you never stop making videos. Take good care!

Here in WY the Russian Olive is considered an invasive species and the state is working to eradicate them. Love your videos! Thanks for sharing!

Love your videos, your gardens are so beautiful and very inspiring. Thank you! The ninebarks are such a beautiful shrub with gorgeous fall colour but the deers took my ninebarks almost to the ground in one night.

I would fill all these gaps with perennials instead of mulch, it would look so much better. There's plenty of options around trees and shrubs. Geranium, heuchera, geum, euphorbia, saponaria, veronica, even some asters like aster divaricatus (now called Eurybia divaricata)... If it's moist semi shade, then you can go into astrantia, campanula, more asters, monarda, eupatorium, persicaria... And if it gets a lot of sun, eryngium, gaura, helenium, helianthus... Mulch is always worse than plants, because it shelters less animals, and can make the soil too rich. Veggies and fruits trees like it, but flowers, ornamental shrubs and trees, it depends. Many prefer leaner soils, and you'll get floppiness and too much growth in rich soils (which make them die quicker).

Which mulch brand do you use? Does it hold the color and value well throughout summer? I live in Texas and everything fades within a month or two. Thanks

I mainly use the shredded Western Red Cedars and Cypress mulches. Xylem Ltd. is the best distributor I ever found that always had a good uniform grind. Both fade faster than I would like, at about the same time frame you mentioned.
