Thank you for a terrific review of yellow conifers. Just excellent advice! I appreciate your honest appraisal of the plants, some thriving and others not, in your garden. I'm in Canada, USDA zone 4, and your presentations are really helpful.

Great content, beautiful property. Can you say anything about the Thuja o. Quebec? I've been searching for weeping Thuja for ages. The only one I've found for purchase was T. plicata Holly Turner. I'm VERY envious of your Quebec Weeping. Recall where you got that? I wonder if your Norway spruce issue could be not enough water for newly establishing (yet large) plants.

I wish I could be more helpful on where I sourced that Quebec Weeping. In the early days of landscaping my current location, I was not as organized as I should have been. I could not even remember what it was a few years after planting it (luckily my wife now documents and maps my furious planting style 😊). The rep. from Iseli Nursery was in my area a few years back and he identified it for me. It is not currently on their website but that is where I think it came from. I used to do the purchasing for a garden center I worked at, and Iseli was the only specialty grower we purchased from at that time. I did not mention it on the video, but I fear the Norway problem may be the well water I use to irrigate my lawn. I’m pretty it’s high in salts and could be the primary problem.

I live in Texas. I'm looking for something near the street ( cul-de-sac, not much traffic), which will be a bit downhill from some small cypresses, & a rose bush. I was thinking that maybe I could try the 'round-about'? Then, maybe those super small ones, that you showed in a line. We live in San Antonio, TX. We have a blue spruce, cliser to the house.

Very interesting, I’ll look up the deer resistance level of these conifers. Sadly the deer here eat everything, even plants noted as toxic like daffodils, liatris, and rhododendrons. It’s best to enjoy your beautiful property though the computer than continuing to buy plants only to find them levelled by morning. Beautiful property, gorgeous collection and stunning garden designs. Thank you.

Just the video I needed. Your garden is amazing. I've been looking for a yellow evergreen/conifer for my small garden in zone 5 Illinois. Through online searches, I discovered the Eastern Hemlock Golden Duke and Golden Duchess trees, and they look stunning. I can't seem to find a local nursery that carries them. 😢
@gardenhike8 ай бұрын
Perhaps your soil is unfavorable for growing Hemlocks, so nurseries in your area shy away from them. That is the case in my area. Many Hemlocks are cold hardy enough but will not grow in our higher pH soils. They need acidic soils and consistent moisture. I looked up those varieties you mentioned. They look great!

@gardenhike Thanks for your reply. I hadn't even thought of the possibility that we may have an unfavorable soil type for these golden Hemlocks. I was only looking at the zone and sizing apart from the colors. Thank you for sharing your knowledge of landscaping and gardening. Your videos are much appreciated. 🌲

Great video! You and I have so many of the same plants. Have you ever tried a 'chief joseph?'
@gardenhike Жыл бұрын
I have not. I looked it up and I like it! Zone 6 though? I think I need to move to a warmer zone, but that could be dangerous on the pocket book for a plant lover 😊.

Haha ya a warmer zone would open a world of new options.

Hi quick question on the video. It looked like you were treating the Sunkist and Yellow Ribbon as the same variety. Is that the case?
@gardenhike4 ай бұрын
I went back and looked at the video. No, that was a mistake on my part. I have it written down on my map as Yellow Ribbon, not Sunkist, and they are separate varieties. Thanks for catching that; I'll make a note in the description box to clarify.

Do you deal with deer pressure on any of these?
@gardenhike Жыл бұрын
I’ve been lucky so far. I have a group of about six deer that tend to show up each winter but they have been content to only be interested in my Tiger Eyes Sumac and a few Aspen. South of me in the city I live, Arborvitaes get hit really hard.
