Synopsis:
Cheng Shao Shang is a young girl who was forced to grow up alone after most of her family had to leave to fight in a bloody war. Thus she becomes stubborn and untrusting. She fends for herself in a town populated by people like her, who have been left behind by the war.
One day, a talented and powerfu general named Ling Bu Yi comes to the town - and falls in love with her at first sight. He resolves to marry her, even though it will cause him no end of problems if he decides to pursue this union. She also warns him that she doesn’t trust him, and that her stubborn personality might not be suitable for the wife of a general. The dynamic between the empress, concubine Yue and the king is really interesting. Concubine yue knows that the emperor loves her the most so she doesn't hesitate to speak what's on her mind but at the same time, she's not interested in the empress position or gaining more power. It looks like she just genuinely want to be with the emperor or something else. She did also say before that she already achieved all the things she wanted. The empress on the other hand, she definitely has some affections for the emperor but knows when to draw the line or at this point she's used to it. She's meek and doesn't really act like an empress so sometimes I forget that she's the empress Both the empress and concubine yue respect each other and there's no scheming nor trying to humiliate the other at all. which is surprising and the first time i'm seeing in ancient chinese dramas

Empress didn’t have a husband who was only fully dedicated to her, that can be such a blow to an already fragile self esteem.

It's cause Empress feels guilt, and envy. She had no choice in picking her husband and she knew the Emperor already had a love that she would be impeding on. Given the bullying and abuse she received as an orphan, all she was looking for was some affection, which she does receive even if only secondary. And thankfully concubine Yue knew from beginning it wasn't Empress fault the situation they were put in. She is a very logical thinker. To get the support to become Emperor their marriage was required and both women acknowledged that their place in Emperor life would hurt the other, so they could empathize with each other's position. Ultimately these two women had no ambition for power it was the men in their lives, and each went through their own hardships and sacrifices that garnered respect for each other. Yue is confident because even though she didn’t get the title many other things were done to give her equal status to make up for sharing a husband. Empress is meek and mild because although she got title she knew she would never receive the level of affection Yue received. These traits were inbeded in her from her foster family.

I love her so much. The ending of this episode, her face, tells me how much she cares for Zisheng. She's not the emotional type and she's curt and to the point in everything, but you can see she really loved Marquis Huo as a big brother, same as her husband did, and she cares for Zisheng as well. In hindsight, this is so heart-warming in such a dark story.

Heart went out to Yuan who loves Niao Niao (Cheng Shangcheng) purely and truly and does not want any harm come in her way even when he knows that she is engaged to someone else. He watches over her with benevolence and a very mature and resigned love. The actor who is playing Yuan is very good too.

I feel the same , his interaction with niao niao are always entertaining, besides I feel like he keeps pushing her to see the truth of life , indirectly , directly guiding her , and he' s been helping her and caring from the shadows. I like this kind of layering of his character.

The actor playing Yuan is actually very skilled, its not an easy role, his expressions, voice control, and little gestures with the fan are very subtle and befitting his role. He's actually a tall, large guy so its interesting how he holds his body like an intellectual and gentleman versus a physically imposing guy. It takes a lot of skill to make subtle facial gestures, his scenes with his mom are touching. I actually find him very attractive physically, he's just a bit immature emotionally. It's lovely how he likes to argue with SS, he didn't have siblings and he craves this sort of peer to peer interactions.

I liked Yuan Shangjian for Niao Niao. He says mean things to her, she gives back as good as she gets. Both are equal. Whereas Ling Buying is too secretive and dark. He controls everything and everyone around him.

During the murder investigation, I love how the Black Guard Soldiers paid close attention to their “Young Master’s Lady” as she was stepping-off the measurement of the room. They watched her close the doors in Yuan’s face, and the Deputy Generals were VERY unhappy they could not find her. When General Ling orders the Black Guard Soldiers to tear the room down, the fury and zeal and swiftness to carry out his order is all over their faces and in every swing of the sledgehammers. 😂😅😂❤🎉 YEA!!!!! The way Zisheng and Niao Niao work together to investigate the death of Liang Shang is brilliant - both of them think alike and make deductions that come to same conclusions even when they are not in the same room or area together (Shaoshang measuring the room inside and outside; Zisheng, gives the order to take down that room!) The two begin to be so in sync that when one breathes in a breath of air the other exhales! ❤♥️❤️

Concubine Yue is extremely intelligent, fair, and just. She understands what is going on in her surroundings. She can read the behavior of the people around her. She is kind, supportive when needed, and sympathetic towards others. It is seldom for the empress, emperor, and concubine to be nice to each other and their subordinates. This emperor is funny and kind, the empress is so sweet, and this concubine is awesomely understanding. These highnesses are exceptionally loving. Sweet. 🥰🥰🥰

41:10 I must say something for Yuan Shen here. His mother and his uncle were deeply in love since kids and his uncle died young to protect the family, his mother tried to kill herself but was stopped by her father. Then his paternal grandfather forced his uncle’s brother to marry his mom. His father has a love of life already, his grandfather killed his girlfriend in front of him and committed suicide straight after. His grandfather’s last words is “I have paid my life for your loved one as an atonement, please take care of the families of Yuan and Liang”(chpt.131and147). His parents’ only task is give birth to a son and basically stopped talking to each other after that, they live in separate rooms with their loved ones’ spirit tablets😅Yuan Shen is a forced-born object! He did not express his love for NN as strongly as the other two at the beginning because his parents’ and his teacher’s love are distorted. That’s why he hates all sorts of love stories especially those who loves each other until/after their deaths. He has flaws in romantic relationship and never experienced such therefore doesn’t know how to treat the girl he likes. That’s his character defect. In the original novel, he is a disciplined person and respected NN and never have a bad-mouth. He was only being aloof. He is the single child from a century-old noble family. As an aristocrat, he carries great responsibilities for three families(YUAN LIANG and QU), marriage has always been a leverage and he hated it too. He has been chasing by girls since young and wouldn’t know what true love is and NN is definitely not the “perfect” wife he has imaged. He wants to deny his feelings for her but couldn’t help falling in love with her. She is totally the unexpected in his purposeful life and he does’t know how to handle it. He became a civil official at the age of 18 and busy with work, an excellent career is his ambition(chpt.25). He never lectured NN and there is no story lines as went to her family as a scholar and trying to get her attention. He has egos but never asked her to change who she is, in fact he actually told her that she can fake in front of other people(chpt.85). Yes, he likes to bicker with NN but that’s fun of life. He wanted to confess his love to her later on but being interrupt so many times, he just held his feelings back. He wanted to do something after Lou Yao and NN cancelled their betrothal, however the betrothal was cancelled in the morning and LBY proposed to her in the afternoon(chpt.65,66), then it’s too late. The imperial power is very oppressive and most importantly is NN has deeply fallen in love with LBY. He might have a chance at the very beginning because NN loved no one at first and YS’s family has less trouble than the other two, his parents are busy mourning their loved ones and will never interfere their married life, they can relax and do whatever they want after have a son. That’s what he meant by saying “I was one step behind, so I lost the whole game”. He initially did not believe in love but longing to be loved. He feared he can’t control his love and didn’t know love has already happened. By the time he has defeated his fear, the opportunity to have love has already gone. (He treated NN nicely and gave/helped her a lot for 5 years but still failed🤣) It’s sad enough for him that NN doesn’t love him and the screenwriter changed his personality is understandable, deleted his story lines is also understandable. Adaptation needs dramatic conflict for entertainment, but added many mean plots and turned him into some kind of person he hated the most in the original novel made me very upset 😭😭😭 The actor Li Yunrui is actually did a great job. He is a muscular athlete and lost 7kg in 2 weeks, learned the grooming of the aristocracy and designed some cute gestures. Otherwise more people would dislike him.

It's actually YSJ defended CSS after a group of girls slandered her behind (Chapter 30), YSJ said: “…….destroying people's reputation and wanton slander is the greatest vulgarity in the world! it is the greatest cowardice to not dare come forward and sow discord behind people’s back! ……People can see what kind of good person CSS is with their own eyes……” The screenwriter has planted this plot onto YSJ saying jealousy/insulting words instead and LBY defended her. YSJ will never say things like CSS is a woman filled with evil schemes and he will live longer than LBY as a civil official! LBY is great already and CSS loves him regardless, no need to use YSJ as a tool to show how good he is. Also, he is the one apologised to CSS and cares about her reputation when accused of meeting alone, not like the one only cares about himself in the drama (Chapter 60)…… And there are many more plots where he is adapted into a petty and jealous person. The screenwriter can delete YSJ completely or create a new character using other names if they don’t like affectionate supporting male roles😡😭

That's the reason why he avoid to easily behead someone, cos the dynasty is still new, the court is unstable, the folks are tired of civil unrest. They need to start focusing on development and rebuilding the nation. I mean Marquis Yue was not just responsible for the Huo clan's downfall. He is ruthless in everything he does. How can someone like him be set free? For what? Because he is Consort Yue's brother? They say the crown prince is too kind but should an Emperor act like that? If the Emperor's family was annihilated because of such petty matters then would he still set them free and proceed to marry and have kids? Those who give up on revenge might be sages and it's great. But Ling Buyi is not that kind of man. He is vengeful. His mother is crazy, his whole clan is dead and he is in power. Even if the dead can't come back, he needs to give them justice. If he gives up on the revenge path that he had chosen just in fear of oppression or country, then what kind of disappointment of a man he would be? Let suppose Niao niao is murdered by the Emperor tomorrow, shall he give up revenge because Emperor raised him? Why should Ling Buyi care about the country and all that? He is not the Emperor, it's not his duty. It is but still, it's not his priority. If he can't avenge his own people... Is he even worthy? Did you see the number of memorials in the background of Huo Chong's memorial tablet. The number of people who died just because Marquis Yue held some grievances against the Empress' uncle. Is it even fair to set an evil man like him free? For country? Like hell, he would do something for the country!

Consort Yue carefully calculated everything, she did the same as SS did when she betrayed her uncle to reduce the damage to her family. She understood that LBY and the Emperor were already close and knew a lot, also in past episodes she made the necessary steps for LBY to protect SS.

I love this episode. It shows how layered the plot is, how layered history is. It's (almost) never two fighting for one thing, it's many factors creating interlocking consequences. And this is portrayed with such elegant emotion I really hadn't expected it in a drama. And it's far from over.

The mother did a complete turnaround bc the last time he approached his mother about picking a candidate for him, she nonchalantly told him to go pick one himself because it was just a trivial matter. Then she goes on to explain her relationship with his father and then she said she was married to his uncle. So maybe he grew up seeing verbal abuse and violence within his parents and relatives because he’s the grandson on the Liang side, which was probably normal in Asian families in those days and still true in some families today.. Yuan is his father’s last name.

I would have to say No. When you suffer TRAUMA, it is hard to release. I believe he has a right to fix the wrong maybe he could have done it differently.
