Synopsis:
Cheng Shao Shang is a young girl who was forced to grow up alone after most of her family had to leave to fight in a bloody war. Thus she becomes stubborn and untrusting. She fends for herself in a town populated by people like her, who have been left behind by the war.
One day, a talented and powerfu general named Ling Bu Yi comes to the town - and falls in love with her at first sight. He resolves to marry her, even though it will cause him no end of problems if he decides to pursue this union. She also warns him that she doesn’t trust him, and that her stubborn personality might not be suitable for the wife of a general. I love the fact she knows that and won’t compromise her morals to get a man love her. If she wanted she could have insulted the concubine yue like the 5th princess does. But no she rises above that petty jealousy. Afcours she wants to be loved by her husband. The father of her children she feels less valued by him but she keeps her thoughts to herself like any respectable women would. She knew she was getting married to a man who loved another so she didn’t even go there and I love that.

The emperor's relationship with Zisheng and Niaoniao are beyond beautiful. I loved how they treat each other like biological parents and children. The scene where Zisheng wants to go to war and the way Emperor reacted was hilarious. And then Niaoniao came with wine. She said it was for the emperor ad went first to her beloved to taste the wine instead of the Emperor. It was so funny to watch the emperor saying "Excuse me, I thought that wine was for me." 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 The way Zisheng's army always shows Niaoniao respect since the moment they learned that their general liked the girl is epic. I really love this. 😘😘😘😘😘😘 39.44 Niaonian told Zisheng to stay alive so that she doesn't have to marry someone else... Epic! 😅😅😅😅

I personally think the emperor, empress and the consort are the three main pillers of this drama leaving aside the main leads.Without them this drama won't be this much hit i guess cause these three are the best postive characters.The Emperor's family(including only the empress and consort)knows how to bring unity amongst people,how to bring out love amongst people rather than punishing people unlike other drama's emperors.This is what I love the most about this drama, it's making us to cry & laugh at the same time❤️❤️

Cheng Shaoshang openly show affection and support for her Man; the Empress lovingly teaching Shaoshang a “trick”; Shaoshang’s parents “eavesdropping”, the General’s Guards insisting a trespasser be dealt with by the General Personally, Shaoshang “sneaking” into the Military Camp…the military guards stealthily watching Every Step Shaoshang makes into the “No Trespassers Allowed” Camp…this is A Tip Top Classic - Epic-- Episode of events…. I must find the Novel in English and read it. Excellent portrayals by the EnTire Cast of Actors!!!! I’m laughing and weeping.

The set up to the needlework scene is just fabulous. First the music and the slow pan to the feathers, threads and whatnots. ShaoShang is in ceremonial white, looking ethereal and solemn. "Light the incense," she commands softly. The maid hands her the needle with awe, a ceremonial tool of importance. SS does a slow brandish, readying herself for start the grand venture. The music goes into a crescendo. She pricks herself. HAHAHAHAHAHAHA. She gathers her breath and restart her solemn endeavor. She pricks herself again. In the same spot. BWAHAHAHAHAHAHA. Then she moans SS-style, "Why is needlework so hard?" I swear I laugh at every part of this "ceremony" as it builds up to the last lament!

I share your sentiments and the situation that the Empress got herself into. She was forced to marry the Emperor because of the Xuan clan alliance with the Wens to strengthen the Emperor's position. She knew the emperor had a woman in his life already. So, if you think about it, Yue Heng gave up a lot of herself and her family too, not to include giving up the man she truly loved, even before he became the emperor. She became content not to be the Empress because she didn't care for the title. At the very least, no one should fault her if the Emperor's feelings did not leave her, not even the Empress. Both women were given no choice for the sake of a peaceful nation. Concubine Yue was right in saying that through all these, the Huo clan lost the most.

@@gemini8966 the while thing is a mess. I don't fault her because I know she was forced into the marriage for the sake of a peaceful nation. And I liked the relationship between the two women on the emperor's side, but still one sided love hurts more. At least for Yue she had the emperor's love and attention but the emperor would visit the empress after being ignored by the consort, or after being chased by her. Even in public Yue had all his attention unlike the empress. To think this whole emperor and his wives story was adapted from a real history, I can't imagine how she must have been feeling

As Yue Heng said at one point, she likes messing up with the emperor and that is due to her long relationship with him. In the meantime the Empress is mild mannered and maybe conscious of the fact that there is really not that kind of love she can have with the emperor. It hurts truly but the empress accepted it though it's a sad state of affairs for her. In one episode, the empress even said that Yue heng must have shed more tears than her but that Yue heng was casual about it.

They never have a say in their marriage cos it will be arranged by their elders. So we actually can say, as a woman at their era, to be able to fall in love with your own spouse and have your spouse whom you previously never even seen finally fall for you is a fortune...but even if you're not that lucky... to be able to marry a man who knows his responsibility and duty, then able to treat you well according to your status... caring towards all his children...it is already a big blessing. The empress may not be able to find true love nor true happiness with her emperor husband, but she can never be sure either that she would even be able to have a peaceful marriage and get a spouse that can treat her and her children well, if she happened to marry another man. A real example is easy to find around their circle, Zisheng's parent, Qu Lingjun's marriage, Wenxun's marriage... and actually many others are not better than that, so... the empress and Yue Fei, both can be said as lucky women already, especially considering that they're married into a royal family.

Today, arranged marriages are still done in many cultures and one main reason is wealth and status. Some business alliances and gene pool are also reasons why the previous generations do it for their children. The difference is that, children now can voice, articulate, argue and defend their sentiments about it (still some, to no avail). Such is life...

What i like most about this episode is when he slipped and confess to Shoshang that his parents were a loving couple. When she ask him to repeat he answered "" " nothing". Awesome script writing throughout this drama. There seems to always be a little part stuck in there after the dramatic part to help lighten the mood. I love it as they go to buy the preserved fruit he escorts her between the Black Armored Guards and on up to the seller where he lays down money to purchase for everyone. She tells the merchant 10:44 "He is good at everything. Just a bit conspicuous."🤣🥰🤣♥🤣 I just love it!
