Freshening Up A 1991 Mercedes R129 Engine Bay

In todays we video we take a look at our new project car for the channel! A 1991Mercedes 300SL, or more commonly known as a R129. We take this first video as an opportunity to deep clean the engine bay, the car had been sitting for awhile and had the inevitable dust and debris in its nooks and crannies. Following the deep clean we added a solid layer of protection across all plastic, rubber and painted areas. It is now a clean area that we can comfortable work in to start flushing fluids and replacing a few mechanical items to get this car running perfect again. As I own W140 with exactly the same engine and engine bay is 95% identical, I should say that you are a brave man, spraying water on all the electronics such as EZL module, which is pretty rare part to get. Hope that car has no electrical problems in future...

My Ford is 11 years old and never had its engine bay cleaned since new. I remember how good it looked when everything was cleaned and all the black plastics were shined up. Still looks clean, my neighbors probably think I’m crazy popping the hood every wash to dust it off 😂.

Excellent video and super clean engine finale! Any tips, suggestions? I am nervous about possible damage to electrical items, etc. My SL R129 needs and engine cleaning and has the all to common foam hood insulation dry rot. Should the engine be running during the cleaning?Should any areas (fuses or ?) be covered with plastic or aluminum foil? Thanks in advance. Peace

Thanks Craig! If you're worried I would just suggest covering as many electrical components as possible. You can dry clean them first for the best look usually

Perhaps you should be aware the hood can be lifted straight up by depressing the tab on the hinge by the passenger side. That'll make it easier for you to reach into the firewall.

Warm ish! Ideally not after it’s been sitting and not when it’s hot. But they’re all just opinions, you’re probably fine either way. Would stay away from hot engines though, just because of steam and your body. Hot engines get wet in the rain all of the time

actually its a 300 SL-24. Everywhere except the US you could get the m103 12 valve in R129. As the 300 SL. The M104.980 4 litre is just an m103 with a modified Cosworth head from the m102 16v. It only ran for a few years as its very un-mercedes.. it runs to 7,500 rpm from the factory and running euro fuel and no catalyst...puts out 240bhp. You can get a modified factory head gasket that solves that problem. I was lucky to have a 300 TE-24 sportline estate, in UK spec...with no cat. It was awesome.
