idk if you realized that the Head Lady-in-Waiting purposely broke the vase so that maomao's salary ( most of which gets sent to her kidnappers ) would be used to cover the cost. it was her own petty way to get back at the kidnappers, plus maomao then gets bonus money that would soley belong to her.

question, why is the kidnappers still involved with her anyways? is it like for ransom, or is she indirectly working for them? i need an answer 😢
@thexvthmember4910

@@fabbae215It's essentially this. If a family were to sell off their kid as an indentured servant, the family receives a cut of the salary their kid makes. So these kind of kidnappers would snatch up people, claim to be their family, sell the person off, and receive cuts of money that way. It's difficult to get all the way to the top of these thibgs to stop the kidnappers to receive their money, but by breaking the vase and saying the person owns my, that also would put the kidnappers in a position of 'debt' as well.

@@fabbae215 It was something practiced in China’s past, yes. And while kidnappings like the one that happened in this show were illegal, it was unfortunately hard to actually enforce punishment, so they occurred often. Apothecary Diaries is set during this period of Chinese history were these kind of things were common.

The "stick" she gets handed (5:00) is essentially a paystub receipt token that would be taken to some form of palace accounting office and used to update her salary, as well as most likely recorded on paper in order to maintain pay records. Usually, it also held some form of royal tag/seal to verify the authenticity of the token. Accounting is eternal, whether in a commercial or government setting, and almost always has been extremely meticulous.
@KravenVanDrakken

Before coinage and paper currency was invented, many different forms of value tokens were created. Artisans in those eras were usually working for high ranking people so intricate patterns used for seals and engravings were not easi to copy. Paired with common folk been kept from reading or writting. Forging a document will usually require a high ranking noble trying to do some illegal trade and even then, the royal artisans in charge of creating seals and similar stuff were so good that they would easily identify any forged token by just having a quick look at it.

Funny thing... history from 30 years ago is wildly different from factual historical things we know today... before the internet and broader access to information a lot of "historians" and publishers were able to print out whatever they wanted and most people would never know if the information they were taught was just made up.

10:00, she enjoys spending nights with the Emperor, that's why she asked for an aphrodisiac to spice up their sex life. That said, being told it's 3x more effective than the aphrodisiac the Emperor already uses would be more than she can handle (ie hoooooours of sex).

So 1 thing: the reason she dropped the pot was because her "family" where the kidnappers who sold her too the palace. No other reason really they did it so they could take the money back essentially with full reason as something priceless was broken. Also note that "stick" has writing on it so she would turn it in at the office for her money probably at the end of her service. So a fun little thing: In a lot of Chinese stories about martial arts there is 1 family that is predominantly good that uses poisons. The Tang family, i read a lot of Chinese and Korean comics and a lot of the time the Tang family are the best at detecting and using poisons. Unlike other major noble martial families they are usually okay people. They are healers and the like cause they are good with plosions so they can treat many different things. So I really like this show cause it has a good vibe and view of those who understand poison so far they arent all evil assassins' some learn about them and study them to help others

6:28 Perhaps he is referring to the oleander. A few years ago, there was a tragic accident in which a group of people who went to a barbecue in France burned a branch of an oleander tree, stabbed meat into the branch, and ate it, resulting in the deaths of all the members. All oleanders are poisonous, and the poison permeates into the soil in which they grow.

@freshestanime so Apothecary diaries takes place within a Chinese dynasty. 14:06 the maids who talk of Maomao’s BG is due to the fact it was common where sons were mostly favored. However maids who worked in the palace were either sent by their parents, sold off by their parents, or in Maomao’s case kidnapped and given to the palace under fake pretenses. However Maomao’s situations is very interesting as she is a commoner who got promoted to work under a royal concubine. Normally concubines close attendants are girls from other nobility, so Maomao had won the lottery when she was allowed to work for a royal concubine.

I remember reading (some Chinese history books) that eunuch only have their balls cut off and still have their "stick". (Survival rate for eunuch is very low due to infection but if one is a orphan on the street or excess young male sold by their family, that's the only way to survive in that era) Eunuch can technically still be aroused medically. ( If I am not wrong the traditional stimulant herb mix is ginger + chinese nut + animal skin + ginseng) Historically some of the higher rank eunuch actually have wives (but mostly those wives are lower rank peasant or daughter sold due to debt). Since those high tank eunuch cant have descendant, they can adopt male as their heir and establish a house / clan.

On the opium not being until later... opium has been a thing in the East Asian nations for centuries. Long before there were syringes, they had opium pipes and dens. So, while it may or may not come up in the anime, opium is definitely a thing. Trac marks, on the other hand, are not likely a thing; as there is no means to easily inject drugs.

@@blobloblob True. From what the show has revealed, it is certain that its aesthetic is heavily based on a juxtaposition of the Dynasties of Medieval China (Tang, Song, Yuan, and Ming). Maomao's eccentric obsession with making drugs reminds me of Myne's eccentric obsession in getting books to read from Ascendance of a Bookworm. They both cute but weird + indifferent to people around them (until there's bond built between them) in almost the same way, just not obsessed in the same thing.

in the past when conflict between kingdoms was common, the food taster was a high-ranking position, which meant s/he was the trusted man of the emperor. it equal to the Governor in political rank. The official rank is a royal knight (I watched JP's movie story of a food taster, and he is an official samurai even not hold a sword). in the bible, Nehemiah was in the same position as a food taster.
