Have 500 beetles and have had for 4 weeks how long does it take for them to lay eggs and see little mealworms have screen in bottom of beetle drawer with oatmeal in it and egg crates in it beetles look like they are doing good but no signs of eggs or new tiny meal worms all so have potatoes and carrots in there also just worried don't see any yet the meal worms are changing over to pupa and on to beetle pretty good and ideas thanks

If your temps are around 80F and humidity 50-70%, it should take 4 to 6 weeks to see movement from baby mealworms. If your temp/humidity is below that it will take longer.

i forget the name of the channel but another breeder had small metal trays made but a plastic one would work, its just a little too high that the beetles can climb up and he puts the pupa on the top. Once they hatch from the pupa they crawl off to get to the bedding material and food leaving the pupa on top of the shelf out of reach to hatch in safety. this would remove the sorting as you can put the pupa right into the bin you want them to start laying.

you're describing the Pupae Bridges. I've used them, but haven't found a good solution. The wooden ones result in beetles climbing all over them, and the plastic ones aren't durable enough.

Where did you buy your trays you keep the mealworms in ?

Do you still hatch your pupae like this? I think it's a brilliant way. Do you give them a moisture source for after they emerge or want till they are in a beetle tray?
@MidwestMealworms3 жыл бұрын
Yes, I still do this. I don't give a moisture source until the beetles are in a tray on their own. I collect them every few days so they don't dehydrate.

concerning temperature how to increase specially its cold in winter ? is there something to add or something to feed for meal worm and beetles
@MidwestMealworms3 жыл бұрын
Not that I've found. You can increase the quantity in the bins to raise temp, but I'd be cautious. Use a small heat source, enclose the room the mealworms are in to maximize efficiency.

Would it be okay to use ss metal trays?
@MidwestMealworms2 жыл бұрын
I think so. You'll see more sensitive temp variations b/c the ss will change temp faster than plastic (I think). I'm also not sure how long they'll hold up....they are 'stain less', not 'stain never'....

Given the huge amount of plastic involved I'm trying to source recycled plastic bins in New Zealand (local for me).

7 beetles per square inch would be 2688 right? do you do around half of that with the 1000 - 1500 just so they can have extra room or am i doing my math wrong lol.... thanks for the info love your videos.
@MidwestMealworms4 жыл бұрын
Correct math. I've added that many before, just seems like it doesn't result in much so may be more than necessary? I don't have good scientific evidence of that, just what I've witnessed.
