This is why I belive a ticking sound is so unsettling. As we listen to it we subconsciously became aware of its similarity to a heart beating. And then our mind (without realizing it I belive) puts the feeling that we are running out of time. And in relation to the similarity of a heartbeat we realize that every beat our heart makes is one closer to death. We can’t wind up our heart and get more “ticks” out of it like you can a watch. It’s done. It’s over. And that is a scary thought indeed. How many ticks does your clock have left?
