@Toneri Ōtsutsuki Funny you should ask. Answer: Me. We moved from a place where city water was fantastic (Edmonton, in Canada) to a place that wasn't so good and the house had filters. Purely out of ignorance (not willful, but ignorance nonetheless) I didn't understand the ideas behind filtration of water. Videos like this have been a great help so now we change our filters on time and enjoy both good flow rates and great taste. But I recall my eyes being opened about filtration... Yikes!
Thank very much for all the simple explanation of every entity. I watch your videos and I have learned alot about my RO system.

Hi That was quite useful. Is there any standard or code that describe GAC usages?
@waterpurificationproductsi7056 Жыл бұрын
There are standards that have certain numbers to demonstrate the effectiveness of removals. Iodine Number for organic chemical effectiveness, Peroxide Number for reactivity rate. Molasses Number for color removal And Tannin number for tannin removal. In our area we choose to use a carbon that is decent in all four numbers - not just one or perhaps two.

Best way is to count the gallons that ran through the filter. Second indication is time. I change them at least every six months (refer to the manufacturer specification or local code). Th third indication is reduced flow. With a lot of sediments in the incomming water, the filter might become blocked quite fast. In this case a sediment pre filter might be recommended.

I'm trying to learn more about Carbon filters (Granular media), just installed 1 for our brewing water to reduce chlorine and make the water taste better etc. I'm currently on the 3rd filter from the supplier and it does indeed remove the chlorine smell but it makes all water smell and taste like soot leaving a powdery feeling in the mouth. So basically it makes our water taste worse than unfiltered and I don't think the manufacturer has a clue. I've already wasted quite a few thousand liters of water flushing it through! Any tips on what carbon filtered water should taste like would be appreciated. I'm in the UK.

What micron size should be used for a sediment prefilter for a well water system before the carbon filter? And what micron size should be used for the carbon block filter?
@arunjain379911 ай бұрын
Take a pre filter - sediment filter of 0.5 - 1 micron, and take carbon activated filter block of 1 micron absolute rating. Thereafter put a post sediment filter of 0.5 micron again before passing that through the ultrafiltration etc.

I'm looking at building a purified water system where hose water will go through the carbon, then an RO membrane, and finally a DI tank. How could I make sure that I replace the carbon in time to prevent damage to the RO system? It'll be a pretty quick flow system hoping to get about 1 gallon per minute. I just haven't found a good way to know how long the carbon filter will last...
@arunjain379911 ай бұрын
You are right. Knowing as to when the filter to be replaced is somewhat tricky. What l do that I keep the filter candle in a transperant housing. When I see that the colour of wrapping of filter turned brown I replace it. One more trick will keep you away from risk and prevent your apprehension of getting the ro membrane damage is that use two carbon activated filter in series and a sediment filter of.05 or 1 micron in between the ro membrane and carbon activated filter.

@keithfillinger3182 Жыл бұрын
Each manufacturer should rate them by gallons or months of usage. They typically underestimate the capacity so you do not run out if you follow their guidelines. A change in water taste or a drop in water pressure are signs to replace filters.

Is it possible that these filters (the small blue one) last up to 2 years? Mine says it lasts 18 months but it has been 2 years and I dont experience any change in the taste or cloudiness at all. I live in another country and it says it has silver resins too. I will probably still change it next month but what always wanted to know what makes filters last longer.
@arunjain379911 ай бұрын
It is not a good idea to wait for bad taste or colour of water because it is a matter of drinking water. You are going to lose nothing if make a rule to change at least once in six months. Other good idea is to use two in series and replace the previous one in one year when you installed both at the same time. Thereafter when replacing the first one after an year, the new carbon activated filter should be installed at the place of second one and the existing second one should be shifted to the position of first one. Now at the interval of 9 months or one year you can repeat the process.
@waterpurificationproductsi7056 Жыл бұрын
Disagree with type of materials used. Coconut carbon has no color removal and is a very slow reactivity carbon thus the need for using twice as much as other carbons to do the same job. In areas of high color like the SE USA it's best to use a different carbon. Carbon that is made for both color and chemical removal and is faster reacting such as lignite coal based is a much better choice.

Check out the manufacturers datasheet for the filter to see what the specific capacity of the filter is for certain pollutants. A carbon filter cannot be reactivated, it as to be discarded after usage.

Probably not. Pfas by definition are "non stick" since they are used for the pans. It's not gonna adsorb to charcoal I think. Reverse osmosis will work perfectly against it.

What are the risks of activated carbon? Lung damage, olfactory fatigue, delayed pulmonary edema may occur with extended periods of overexposure. Activated carbon can remove oxygen from air causing a severe hazard to workers in enclosed or confined spaces.

What happens when activated carbon gets wet? Wet activated carbon depletes oxygen from the air. Materials allowed to smolder for long periods in enclosed spaces, may produce amounts of carbon monoxide which may reach the lower explosive limit for carbon monoxide of 12.5% in air.
