Anyone who thinks Kenneth is a dick in this interview probably doesn't know them well. These guys have been friends for years, this is what friends do. I personally found it pretty awesome to see them arguing about a process that is usually explained with some bullshit cookie cutter answer by most artists.

Their music so very good. And I have to admit I enjoyed watching them argue, because they're being completely honest, bickering while promoting themselves in an interview. They quarrel like brothers. It's interesting to see how they push each others' buttons, then work it out. Makes me wish I grew up with a brother.

Hard to define the visceral reaction that touches deep into the reaches of your music memory. That folk sound of the 60s a hint of Simon and Garfunkel, Collins, Baez, Peter, Paul and Mary, remembering the stark divide of rock music tuning out and folk music tuning in. Viet Nam. The rockers wanted to escape, forget, the Folk faction wanted to be present, to NOT forget, not look away. I get that reaction when I listen to these two. Its their harmonies... that sound.

Saw these two on Austin City Limits the other night. Have been hooked ever since. Nice to know there are still some real musicians that can actually play an instrument instead of just bang around on it :)

These guys are great, and it's funny how they argue with philosophy, like my friends and I do all the time. They've got such a great friendship and hope the next album is as good as Ash & Clay!

Good lord, this was pretty real. It has the feel of a clinical case example tape intended for relationship counselors in training, and Jason Verlinde probably should have watched a few in preparation. It makes me appreciate these guys more than I did. I can imagine it gets old fast to hear the tired comparisons to other folk harmony duos.

I enjoyed hearing you both describe how you work with your creative method,being a creative writing person from as long as I can remember, I have to say, at times its the wrestling way and at times its the just came to me way, its both, I love how you two as creative people have given birth to something bigger than yourselves and unplanned so its kind of like youre taking care of this baby neither of you planned on having...and whether you like it or not, you have both become something bigger than yourselves and in a way are married to it and have to nourish it , but with obligation comes much reward!! the secret now is not to resent it but to embrace it xo

I'm with you: "... with obligation comes much reward!!." Listening to the back and forth conversation captures the essence of working it out, no matter what. I can't imagine the strain and pressures of having to keep going, day after day, gig after gig. Road miles, air miles, contracts/riders, a blur of random hotels, missing family with relatively few normal life moments in between - sure, they're choosing it but the muse can be a wicked master at times. Bickering is the real deal, raw or not. Love this interview!

LoL. I wonder what happened before this interview, or if they were just butting heads this day? Either way, I can definitely relate. But I really don't think they will ever totally back out from playing music with each other because of this tension. You can tell they have such a great friendship and are so comfortable with each other, because they keep stabbing each other with insults which they know will get into the other's head and eat at them. Also, they have the balls to say these things in the first place. Definitely a brotherly/best friend argument.

Road weary, looking for a fight, working through shit.. Nothing out of the ordinary here; wrestling to the ground what presents itself. I'd have more to say, but I gotta get back to the hard work of writing music. Don't wanna be caught unprepared when the next idea/feeling presents itself. There are some more songs out/in there waiting for me to get my hooks in and drag out into the sunlight. You guys have obviously done your work. Keep the harvest coming. Oooh, that was corny......

I'm certain there's a type of flattery when the act is compared to Simon and Garfunkel? For myself, they are The Milk Carton Kids. The fact that they harmonize so well, is sort of irrelevant. It seems. ... for there are so many other disparities to label them thusly.

What's up with the rag on his guitar??
@SamanthaWhatWhatNow8 жыл бұрын
His guitar is really old and beat up, so when he plays with the capo up high, the strings vibrate a lot. The rag helps, I guess.

@@SamanthaWhatWhatNow There is an interview in Acoustic Guitar where Kenneth says it prevents string buzz. That little Martin is really old and settled in. It is also a trademark I guess. He put it on a little Martin at Norman's Guitars too.
