Once again...........David places the "common" into the uncommon..........I've just never been set up to think in terms of adding all these chord substitutions or even chromatics or licks or added notes when playing acoustic blues but David "Genius" Hamburger certainly does and just by carefully following his leads.......and a ton of practice........my fingerstyle acoustic blues playing has reached new and (to me at least) exciting new heights!! Like Mick once sung: "It's only fingerstyle, but I like it! Love it!" or that 70s tune went something like that I believe!! Jim C.

Thanks for the explication of the several ways to name and interpret the passing chord at about 10:35 here, my inclination is to call it the V7b9 (F#7b9) of B, the destination at bar 9 of the 12 bar, one of the interpretations here. I say that because it really describes the function that chord is playing as a dominant, which, when that happens, is to me the best way to refer to it.

David a simple question with a no-doubt difficult answer. I love your lessons, but I find that some of the ideas challenge my technique. Should I play a simple workaround to get the whole concept going in time, or is getting those trickier details right the best thing?

Hey Greg, sorry to leave this hanging so long! Since I'm not sure exactly what's hanging you up it's hard to say, but there's nothing wrong with simplifying things to get something you can play well in time. You can always go back and fill in the details later. When I learned things off of LPs way back when I did plenty of simplifying, on purpose or inadvertently, or through just remembering things differently and working out an alternative by mistake.
