@@Shred_The_Weapon I think just cause he’s already playing decently high up on the fretboard so when he ever so often goes up to very high notes it makes them sound higher than they are, at least that’s what I think

I’m a guitar player by trade, although I thought I was going to be a bass player when I began learning to play guitar. That was during the winter of 1995. It wasn’t until the following year that I bought my first bass guitar. I’ve always wanted to have at least one fretless model, but because of my slapping style I was discouraged. Even Victor Wooten doesn’t slap on his fretless models. If I knew of an artist like you, Remco, I would have rebelled and gone forward attempting to make every bass guitar I’ve owned fretless.

Remco very nice as always , Thanks. I just got a P bas and it's like holding a 2x4 with the thick neck but I like the extra space on the fretboard. My Fender Jazz seems to be lacking space on the fretboard after playing this P bass. It seems my fingers fit the P bass better.

Hey Remco, what makes the tone of fretless basses so different from regular basses, is it simply the lack of frets? Because that "Mwah" sound you're speaking of doesn't occur on regular basses.
@jamessakimae9655
@jamessakimae9655 8 жыл бұрын
it is simply because of lack of frets without the fret being there you get the mwah by just doing slight vibratos which takes the note a bit higher and also a bit lower
@RemcosGrooveLab
@RemcosGrooveLab 8 жыл бұрын
I second what James said & like to add that the tone & vibration coming from just your fingertips as opposed to a fret, generates different physics as well, even when using no vibrato at all. Frets give different dynamics, with it's pros & cons, it's better for bending & tapping & for example trills aren't even possible without frets. But the abscence of frets open up a lot of great possibilities like vibrato, clean slides (also with harmonics!), the emotional depth that "mwah" can give & basically just the total freedom of expression which I've come to love so much on this instrument :) Thanks for dropping by guys!

The bass almost sounds like a sitar on certain notes. Are you using very low action or is it the plucking technique?
@RemcosGrooveLab
@RemcosGrooveLab 8 жыл бұрын
Yeah the action is pretty low on this bass, when I pluck a bit more fierce it gives that bite to the tone :) The coating on the fingerboard in combination with roundwound strings helps to get that vibration as well. Thanks for dropping by Vin!
@alekbaublis
@alekbaublis 8 жыл бұрын
+Remco's Groove Lab won't roundwound strings eat at the fretless fingerboard though?
@vinigretzky97
@vinigretzky97 8 жыл бұрын
Alek Baublis Not Remco but I use roundwounds on my fretless (without fingerboard coating, bare rosewood) and yes you will be able to see the marks after only a week of playing but until you will actually have to do the first sanding will take many months of heavy playing (definitely more than a year). Because the strings will eat more into the wood if you don't have coating, you get a bit more "mwah" but less (sitar like) overtones and treble (like in this video).
@vinigretzky97
@vinigretzky97 8 жыл бұрын
***** Thanks for the info. What sound do you get on that bass when you play the strings more "traditionally"? So digging into the string and landing on the one above it instead of plucking away from the strings
@RemcosGrooveLab
@RemcosGrooveLab 8 жыл бұрын
When playing regular fingerstyle I get a standard, clean J bass sound. I've set the action on the verge of total clean vibration of the strings when playing at the bridge pickup or more gently at the neck pup & when I dig in a bit deeper I can get that attack of the strings resonating against the fingerboard. Most of my basses are set up this way action-wise, so I can switch the tone & attack with the intensity of the plucking hand :)
