@@unclejudymusic I got fret wrap because I'm not an experienced player and am having trouble controlling the extra noise from my playing but am having trouble understanding how to use it. Newbie question here, but how tight and where is it supposed to go ( before the nut or after?) . Mine is tight ( maybe too small) and it's choking out some of my fretted notes and not allowing me to play any open strings ( is it supposed to do that?)

Many, many, many guitarists in the studio did and still do this. In the past even more than today. Nowadays we have non-destructive editing, spectral editing and all the fancy stuff to get rid of a lot of potential noise even without using a fretwrap. If they had the tools we have now they would have used them as well. Making an ideology out of not using fretwraps is just romantizising something that never really existed in the first place. Dampening the strings was never about masking inherently bad technique, it was about saving time and money and getting rid of eventualities.

I use a fretwrap, but there's no denying that fretwraps come in pretty clutch at cleaning up noise that could be cleaned up with better muting and technique but I work 2 jobs and ain't got the energy to record 50 takes, putting the fretwrap above the nut brings it down to like 30 takes

Sam Vallen, one of the best prog guitarists I'm aware of and one of my inspirations, has released multiple videos where he shows his solos and he uses fret wraps all the time. I definitely practice without them, but when I'm recording I will usually use a hair tie and a fluffy sock of on the first couple of frets lmao. I should really get a proper fret wrap.

As always love your videos! Love how you can make great points while being chaotic. I love my fret wrap! I'm a filthy horrible bassist who plays guitar for fun/writing purposes and the fret wrap helps keep the extra noise down. They're great! I sound fine without it, but it just makes it that much tighter. Probably going to get one for bass cause I do some tapping in a tech death band I'm in. Make it sound a tad tighter then it already is.

They’re great for recording. There are top guitarists who have recorded one string at a time, with just one string fitted to the neck at a time. Whatever gets you the results you’re after.

Today I've discovered there exist things called fretwraps

I used one in front of the nut for my first year or so of playing. It definitely helps to get a better and cleaner sound without worrying about your technique so early on. I had to stop using it though when I wanted to play more technical rhythm parts that used a lot of open strings. That taught me proper technique in muting the strings and I never felt the need to go back to using one. With that said, using one behind the nut makes sense for any player, since the vibrations of the strings behind the nut can't be controlled the player at all.

I commented that you don’t need to play a piece exactly as written and use different techniques and slightly different notes to get a similar result. Boy, did a lot of people get upset. A lot of artists don’t perform their songs as they wrote it, one of them being Tim Henson who doesn’t play the alternate picking part of Playing God with alternate picking.

I see a TON of toxic masculinity in the guitar community on KZbin. People like to look down their noses at others to make themselves feel better. I don't begrudge anyone for using things like fretwraps to improve their performances. Hell, I don't even care if someone wants to use those finger rubbers so their finger tips don't hurt when they're playing (some people actually can't form callouses on their fingertips). When I see this shit, I end up unsubscribing from the channel. I play guitar because I like the way it makes me feel. And while I don't use a fret wrap or the finger rubbers or any of the other things that guitarists like to look down on others for using, it infuriates me when I see people talk shit about them. Thank you for reminding everyone what's important about making music. I'm subscribing even though this is only the first video I've seen on this channel, which I almost never do, just because this video struck such a chord (unintentional pun, sorry) with me. Keep doing what you do.

Know why I have a fRet wrap? Cause when I started playing again after many years ago, I decided to get a 7 string for the first time. Then I said, why not get a multiscale too while im at it, and have both, any guitar would feel weirdd after 6 years off. So why? I promised you I'd tell you why a nd here it is, because EVERY video on 7 string multiscale guitars, the guy had one around the nut area. So I just figured I'd need one too.
