Thank You for giving your teaching free of charge. I recommend Freya’s support technique because I have taught my students the vocal chords closure by the yelling part, a thousand times ;-). This has helped a lot of them. But not everyone dares to yell in front of a teacher. So it can be hard work for both the coach/teacher and his students to be set free of blockades. They need patience and power of endurance.

Hello Freya! I been watching your videos for hours and I am amazed how smart actually you are . I really enjoy your videos and always am finding something new. Problem is that I have MTD and have had vocal problems for years. Visited many speech therapists and they just say that I should find good vocal coach but I live in small town and can't afford that. Maybe you could suggest me some of your videos where I should start? My native language is not English I hope you understand me:)

Great video as always Freya. We agree on so many things. A lot of contemporary singers don't lean into their voice and experiment with various levels of vocal fold closure, especially stronger, more intense levels because they perceive it as straining. They haven't learned to differentiate strain from tension and the need to manage the tension or difuse it. They don't realize it's the breathy singing that let's the air through and it basically blow-dries the folds making them raw and more susceptible to blistering (nodes, polyps).

That's interesting. Would I be better off not singing softly to myself(breathy) then? While I work etc. I mean. I guess that would defeat the purpose of practicing good vocal cord closure?

thanks for the great exercises Freya! Just had an idea. As a newbie vocalist I find I have a difficult time doing all the things you are teaching us at the same time. For this exercise I find I am so preoccupied with the vocal cords that my support isn't good. So I had the idea from one of your support videos to push against a wall while I am doing the vocal cord closure exercises. This forces me to at least feel what the support should feel like. Do you think this is a good idea and do you have any other suggestions for addressing this issue? Thanks!

Hi, Freya!!!! you know there are songs that start soft and they get stronger in their way to the end, arriving at the point where the emotion gets to the máximum and you yell with all your heart. At that point you can begin the phrase with a grasp. For example, there is a song sang by Lara Fabian "perdere l'amore" in which she does it. Can you please consider doing a video about this? Thank you and have a beauty day PS sorry! I hope I could explain the idea.... my english is not so good

My vocal cords do not work properly, they do not close properly. Do you have any videos/exercises about this topic. I can not get my voice high, since it happened I can only have low tones and my voice is hoarse. I cannot sing anymore. I am very sad. I am an amateur guitar player/singer, but now I can´t sing. These exercises are wonderful but I can´t get the highs. Bless you!

Theoretically you could have a camera inserted through your nose to check. But honestly, just listen closely to your voice - if your hear any breathiness they aren't fully closed.

First they say sing with open throat, now vocal cord closure.. I have not seen a real example of exactly how to make sure either one is happening.. I dont want to sing high, I want to sing low to mid with tons of power, when I want to use it..like Ronnie Van Zant on "Simple Man" when he sings the word SIMPLE with tons of power, clear, and steady on the note..how can I sing like that? Listen to that song to see what I mean..
@caramelcocoa234
@caramelcocoa234 6 жыл бұрын
Michael Craig I think it’s open throat closed vocal cords. So your cords close but you need space in your throat for air. Think of the vocal cord as 3 rubber bands (not circle but straight). If you stretch the bands they will be stretched but opened like this | | | instead of this ||| . You need the latter when singing. That’s how it makes sense to me anyway lol

vocal chords don't exist, their called vocal folds. if you want to sing better you should look up how to sing with your diaphragm, and you should look up postural alignment. Also forget what she says about tightening your body and feeling the tension, you should be loose. If you do stuff like that you should see some improvement
@AlisInterrail

I just don't understand and I am getting very frustrated.... Where is the difference between closing vocal folds and closing throat? What should I feel in my throat? Because to me doing these exercise feel like closing my throat, but when I go to higher notes (head voice), closing my throat instead produces *more breathy* sounds, which is like a counter-sense. Can anyone help me?

What's the name of the other video you mention? I need to see it that one because I'm always trying to understand what's going on inside. Thanks. Also is there somewhere you talk about good vocal chord closure at the same as you open your throat. I am finding the two things seem to be pulling in opposite directions in my head voice. I am learning classical singing and I find it hard to completely rid my head voice of air.

Raju, there are compensary strategies to bring your right vocal cord to your left. You need an ENT specialist and a speech and language therapist, who help with the pathology, rather than a voice coach, who works with normal voice using artistic approach.
