Another brilliant and thought-provoking talk by our favorite Xavier Salamone! Bastiani is clearly an artist who deserves more attention and I look forward to learning more. BRAVO FRICK CURATORS for keeping us all sane and learning during the pandemic-- these programs have been a joy.

Another superb talk by Xavier Salomon--myriad ideas and insights, so wonderfully contextualized, excellent on multiple levels. But would have liked to see more detailed images of the Bastiani Magi, information on support and dimensions (small matters but still important). Many thanks.

Thank you so much for this wonderful presentation. Always a treat to learn about new art works and artists from Xavier. This adds to our idea of Venice in the 1470's with a competing family vying for prominence with the Belini workshop.

Thank you Xavier, Aimee and the Frick Collection people for this amazing year of uploads. The series would have been outstanding under any circumstance, but with this strange and rather dreadful year of 2020, it’s been a real haven of online art, knowledge and intelligence. Thank you again, and I dropped a donation which I hope can make a small difference.

Based on your experiences what are the best things to see in Italy?

The Nativity is a subject of christmas so wish you god blessing and Next happy christmas in advance 2021 year. I saw in Gentille magasine many paintings about Jezus birth and Betlehem where the star schowed Maria travelling on the donky with Joseph and the three King admired the little borned baby Jezus King aour savour.So you mentioned Lazzarus Bastianis works what I have never heared before and was a very great artist.I rembet Paduas Chatedral withe a group hungarians on the way to Venice where Our first italian biscop Gellert is burried to bring home the reliquie which is kept now in Budapest in the Down town church at the Danube.I recommend you to visite it once as it is surrunded by italian escuavations and ruins and from there you can enjoy the wie to the Royal Palace on the othet side of the river. THanks Arriderverci

This is a wonderful talk - but if Mary has to travel back to Bethlehem for the census because it is where her family is from, why doesn’t she stay with family members? She wouldn’t need to stay at an inn.
@christthekingd6240 Жыл бұрын
The Magi were not “mythical” kings. They were Persians and they did go to the Christ child.
@bahhumbug98243 жыл бұрын
Mary should've booked a hotel with Expedia first before just going on out to Bethlehem. Wouldn't have had to spend a night in a stable and Jesus could've been born in style.

Research on an artist like Bastiani sounds incredibly interesting, a mystery to be solved. What I most admire about these presentations is the context of cultural history of the artist and painting. Art history was not presented as cultural history when I studied in the late 1970s. It is more interesting to consider an artist living and working in a larger milieu among other artists and patrons. For all we know, Bastiani’s personality contributed to his success, and the quality is there as well. That is what is so phenomenal about Italian art of the period, the number of fine artists for patrons to choose from. Merry Christmas!

I can't tell you enough what a gift of learning and fun. So much gratitude! Merry Christmas!

I love your art videos, but I think you should be careful about using words like "myth" and "legend" about some things that are actually in the Christian Bible, the New Testament. It's offensive to use that terminology just because it may not be your religion. Please just stick to art history, at which you are a master, without giving your opinions of what is "myth." Also, they were returning to the city of Joseph's ancestors -- he was from the House of David, not Mary's, although it is believed she also was from the line of David.

Again a wonderful presentation. I think its important to take the birth narratives in the Bible with a grain of salt. A census is not conducted by having everyone travel far from their homes in order to assess tax revenue but rather by having officials assess the actually residents within the area. The idea of traveling to Bethlehem was created in order to make a connection with the historical King David. The Bible says the mesiah will be a decendant of his.
