I'm glad Michael addressed the misconception that the biggest reason for inflation in Australia was price gouging by multinational companies. The government have been sitting on their hands and have stayed out of the conversation of inflation due to everyone thinking it's just big business taking advantage of the situation when in fact it was government policies, taxes and debt that was a large part of inflation but hey... it's easy to point the finger at Coles and Woolies. At least I can buy a load of bread from the store, what can I ask the government for?

Love to see Micheal’s sources saying corporate profits aren’t the primary contributor to inflation. Because I can’t find anything to back what he’s saying. As always happy to be corrected with evidence. But especially on the domestic level big businesses have passed on costs to consumers and increased their profit margins simultaneously. Wages haven’t moved “ government related expenses” haven’t moved meaningfully during this time. So I’d love to know on what basis he is pushing back so firmly. Especially when using OECD methodology as the RBA uses datasets that are effectively manipulated to exclude profits due to accounting practices. For example a regular person wouldn’t consider a share buyback program to be a an operating expense. But the RBA does…
