You obviously never played football(or any other sport where there's so much pressure to commit). And that's fine - no judgement, not everybody's cut out for athletics. But you also clearly don't know about the actual story of James Miles. Were you shuffled from one family member's home to another as a child? Did u get beat by your father's gf while he was working his trucking routes? Did u end up in state foster care only to be abused more? Were you considered a beast of burden by a racist small Texas town who only valued you for your athletic ability(i think we both know that's a no)? Were you discarded by your community because of an injury? Just to be called a "bonehead" by someone who could've never survived the same circumstances.

The problem is the Doc was just beating around the bush too much, trying to soften the blow. He needed to be more direct and just explicitly say "You have a torn ACL, your season is over. This might be career ending as well." That would be rough to hear, but I think Miles would have accepted that a lot easier then what the Doctor ended up saying.

And I hate this movie, because in reality, the *exact* opposite happened! Short version: Several doctors and trainers in Odessa failed to diagnose the ACL tear (even accusing Miles of faking his pain), and it was Miles himself and his uncle who were smart enough to realize how wrong that diagnosis was (because he couldn't put any weight on it)! They eventually went to Midland to seek a second opinion, and the Midland doctor finally diagnosed it correctly - but even then, committed (at least based on what we know today - not sure what was known about ACL tears back then) another form of malpractice. The doctor told him he didn't necessarily need surgery and that it was still possible for him to play as long as he wore a brace! Miles today feels the severity of the injury was not properly explained by that doctor and admits he never would've played if he was properly informed of the severity! But in this movie, they put *all* the blame on Miles and his uncle! The two people who were right all along and suffered one of the most severe forms of negligence were blamed for what happened to them! To be clear, the actors were fantastic. The football scenes were very well done. But again, the story was so disrespectful to the actual people affected by the story (and also, the real story was so much more interesting) that I now get angry re-watching several of these scenes.

bitter scene and even that exchange of words is a stark contrast when the doctor tells him about his son playing for midland then being a premed, while Boobie is about to receive news that he can't play football anymore, everything he's been groomed for was centered around it.
@TheStapleGunKid2 жыл бұрын
The doc was just beating around the bush too much. He should have just explicitly said "You have a torn ACL, this is going to put you out for the season, end of story." Miles probably would have understood that. Even in 1988, it was common knowledge that an ACL tear is a season ending injury every time. Surely someone as obsessed with football as Miles would know that. Also there's no way any coach would just take a player's word for it that he's fine after an injury like that. He'd be required to get written authorization from a doctor for sure.
@TheIanverse2 жыл бұрын
You’re right, the coach should have been given proper authorisation to allow him to play. It was irresponsible of the coach to allow him to play despite the injury.

Worst part about this, he could have had an ACL reconstruction and been ready to play in college the next year. Back then they immobilized you for a bit and the recovery time was longer, but it wasn’t an uncommon injury. Whatever college that wanted him would have still taken a chance. Obviously playing again didn’t help. I tore mine in 1989, even with how they did it then in six months I was running and came back stronger and just as fast. In 1997 I tore my other knee, I was back on the court in four months. Course now I’m 50, and after two ACL reconstructive surgeries on my right knee I just had a total knee replacement. But a year out I’m pain free and heavy into cycling and weight training.

In real life the coaches pressured him and bullied him into playing through the injury after sitting out for some time and that exacerbated the injury. They questioned his toughness and commitment to the team instead of being sympathetic and listening to medical advice even though he had a serious injury. Apparently a trainer or doctor gave bad advice and said if he kept it in a brace and inactive for two months then he could return but obviously an ACL tear needs surgery and much more time to heal. It makes me sad

Never noticed but the first eleven seconds is foreshadowing. The doctor is talking about how his son played at Midland and then went to Penn. And in real life, the doctor should've informed him of the severity of the injury and told him his only option was to get surgery! Yes, in real life, the doctor did *not* do that and potentially committed severe negligence! And somehow, that doctor was *the best* doctor Miles and his uncle visited - because that doctor *actually diagnosed* the ACL tear! Yes, multiple doctors and trainers in Odessa *failed* to diagnose it (and straight up accused Miles of faking his injury), and it was *Miles* who realized they were seriously wrong and the injury was far worse than they were concluding - eventually leading to his visit to the Midland hospital to get a second opinion!

In reality, doctors in Odessa should've properly diagnosed his ACL tear (they failed to do so), and the Midland doctor who finally did correctly diagnose should never have failed to explain the seriousness of such an injury and (yes, the doctor actually told him this) said that he could still play if he wore a brace! In reality, it was the opposite of what the movie portrays! Miles and his uncle knew there was something seriously wrong with his knee and that he couldn't put any weight on it - and doctors (mostly in Odessa) told him he was fine and (the doctor in Midland told him) that he could still play. Ugh!

What's even more f-ed up is that, in reality, events in this saga played out almost precisely *the opposite* of how this movie portrays it. Doctors in Odessa kept refusing to believe Miles was actually injured or in pain, diagnosing far less serious problems, and it was Miles himself who realized they were wrong and that something far more serious was wrong with his knee (because he couldn't put any weight on it). It was eventually correctly diagnosed by a doctor in Midland, but then he was told he could still play if he wore a brace (obviously not true, he needed surgery)!

It’s sad what they did to him in real life. Questioning his toughness and heart. One coach telling the media he needed to “pull his skirt up” and getting him to play way before he was ready. It’s sickening knowing that in Texas especially back then a grown adult was worried more about their record than the life future and health of a KID. A ducking kid. As someone who played 4 sports all through middle and high school I understand the love for the game. The love of competition. Not wanting to let your team down. One of the worst feelings I ever had was the day I knew my sports career was over and it wasn’t from injury, it was from realizing I wasn’t good enough to compete at the next level. I can only imagine what it would feel like knowing you could and possibly be great and it all be taken from you. Especially if that’s what your plan on life was with nothing to fall back on. It’s a sad story that’s happened more times than we can count in high school sports and high school football in Texas is like a damn cult

In reality, it was the opposite of your last few sentences, and the crazy irresponsibility belongs to the doctors who misdiagnosed him and failed to properly inform him of the seriousness of the injury even after it was correctly diagnosed.
