Your jaunt through the Lady Bar area was my distant past, now more than 50 years ago in old Saigon. I taught English at the Hoi Viet-My (Vietnamese American Association) in Cho Lon, would pass through those kinds of places outside of Tan Son Nhat, or in downtown Saigon, e.g. Bui Vien street, or elsewhere. Many decades ago. I can't tell you more.

There is more to life now. Like researching ancient Champa (Central Vietnam). My 1972 M.A. thesis reconstructed its economy. I read French and Vietnamese. Much more to life than drinking away your time.

Saigon will not survive without foreigners tourist. Bui Vien street was packed with foreigners when I was here three years ago. Every foreigners who came to Vietnam always visited Bui Vien street.

BTW whatever happened to those kids that used to run around on Bui Vien, selling gum, etc, lotto tickets, etc? i hope the government found somewhere for them to live and with three meals a day. can't imagine how, if the average Viet person is struggling, financially, those kids are coping....
