I was 16 when my dad got me my first job summer job on a housing project after begging him. It was 1967. One of the rare Seattle summers where almost every day was sunny. But what a shock. I couldn't believe how long an 8 hour work day was. At the end of the work week on Friday I felt liberated if only for a couple days. This song really hit home. RIP Stevie and George. Your legend just continues to grow. Thanks for the song.

This is a great song and an excellent lesson. When a song has a lot of changes in it and has to be broken down into that many segments it is critical to back up frequently and show (and replay) the order and transitions of those changes. It is easy to get lost in the weeds on this type of song structure, but you do a good job of keeping it in order. I wish everyone who does lessons on here would do as well. Thanks.

Hi Jesse, Did you reverse the video? I love this song so much. And I was thinking how convenient it was that you’re left handed because I’m getting A lot of joy teaching myself to play and sing along. Anyway thank you for sharing, this song is so relatable. Ive got a suspicion you reversed it deliberately so we can learn it! You’re gold mate! Counting cards is a way cool album by the way. Heads up 7 up is wild and unique, learin’ curve is a banger draft dodgers, it all a great listen.

this is great. Always loved this song, edgy and weird with those spanish/arabic sounding notes. Reminds me that over a B7 chord you can basically play any note in passing on the melody, because it's the V chord, and thats all about raising the tension for release on the Em. I swear, one doesn't need any theory, just search for weirdness on the V chord. anyway, that is how I understand that riff on the B chord.

This sounds like a tough song to play, requiring a LOT of fast, coordinated movements. When he sings, "to ME," that's a B minor and that chord alone is very challenging to play. Yes?

As I previously mentioned this is great tutorial except you are completely wrong about the chord that follows the F# . It's in fact a Bm not a major. After D it does go to the B major but the first time it is a minor. Oh and my band is now rehearsing it. What a great tune
@OneChartguitarlessons Жыл бұрын
I hear you. And the key of A major would suggest that the B chord should be a minor. But I can't hear the minor 3rd in that chord definitively. And every time I play it as a minor it sounds wrong to me. So I'm gonna stick with B major. Perhaps they play it as a B5? Does anyone have any clear evidence either way? Would love to hear from you, even if it proves me wrong!

I count this song out as using a very slow--but very busy--12 bar form. Do you agree?
@OneChartguitarlessons Жыл бұрын
To me it feels longer than a 12 bar form. I’d have to know exactly how you’re counting it to know if we’re thinking the same thing.
@VUclear Жыл бұрын
@@OneChartguitarlessons Please accept my apology for taking so long to reply. A chronic procrastinator. The lyrics are as I copied and pasted them from a lyrics website. The numbers are for end of the measure that ends each section of lyric. Using the timer on youtube and a calculator, I came up with 94 beats per minute as the tempo. I think that’s pretty close. It’s also possible to count it out at a very rapid tempo and double all the measure numbers. I still can’t successfully count out how the very beginning of the song is divided. To my ear, the verse is divided into three 4 bar sections, whereas the refrain is divided 4-3-5. The lyrics “Monday I’ve got Friday on my mind,” at the end of the refrain could be called the 13 and 14th bars of its melody or a 2 bar transition. Monday mornin' feels so bad 2 Ev'rybody seems to nag me 4 Comin' Tuesday I feel better 6 Even my old man looks good 8 Wed'sday just don't go 9 Thursday goes too slow 10 I've got Friday on my mind 12 Gonna have fun in the city 2 Be with my girl, she's so pretty 4 She looks fine tonight 5 She is out of sight to me 7 Tonight I'll spend my bread, 8 tonight I'll lose my head, 9 tonight I've got to get 10 to night 12 Monday I'll have Friday on my mind 14/2 + instrumental fill Do the five day grind once more 2 I know of nothin' else that bugs me 4 More than workin' for the rich man 6 Hey! I'll change that scene one day 8 Today I might be mad, tomorrow I'll be glad 10 'Cause I'll have Friday on my mind 12 Gonna have fun in the city 2 Be with my girl, she's so pretty 4 She looks fine tonight. 5 She is out of sight to me 7 Tonight I'll spend my bread, 8 tonight I'll lose my head, 9 tonight I've got to get 10 to night 12 Monday I'll have Friday on my mind 14/2 Ever since I saw a Wynton Marsalis American public television show on the blues-in which he and his guests showed how often and unexpectedly it shows up in popular song--I’ve kept a part of mind alert for the twelve bar blues. That’s the context for noticing the form of “Friday on My Mind.”
@VUclear Жыл бұрын
Big oops 4 beats to the measure.
@OneChartguitarlessons Жыл бұрын
@@VUclear yep, I'd agree with that. Well picked up. I would not have thought of this as a 12 bar pattern, blues or otherwise, but there it is. Mr Marsalis is a smart cookie, and his brother Branford completely blew my mind at a gig in San Fran in the 90s. Talk about unpredictable music forms!
